Need Some Injection Pump Help

Replaced my IP yesterday & this afternoon finally got the air bled out and the truck to start.

It is running really rough & burning excess amount of fuel.

When I press down the accelerator then let off, the truck goes to idle then rev's up slightly. You can see this in the beginning of the video i posted if you listen and watch the RPM's.

I am wondering if this is normal and I just need to fine tune the engine.

I took the high pressure oil pump housing off for ease of removing the pump. I followed the instructions for re installation. I lined up the harmonic balancer at top dead center & lined up the injection pump timing gear the best I could. I wonder if this is a sign I may be a tooth off.

Does the timing just need to be retarded or does it seem like it was installed incorrectly?

I would really appreciate some thoughts on this.

I put new Injectors & Glow Plugs in last Fall. I just put a new return line kit on as well.

The engine is not leaking fuel from anywhere.

timing is off.
and these engines do not have a HPOP. what did you remove that you are calling a HPOP?

The injector pump gear housing?

As you now know, taking the gear housing off is not the easy way to change the pump. As said, your timing is off, it could be 180 out, balancer is tdc for the correct and incorrect timing mark.

Thanks guys.

I will take it back a part and try to line it up correctly this time.

I was referring to the injection pump housing. While reading the manual I thought that's what was referred to as the HPOP. I must of been mistaken.

I read through all the timing threads and thought finding top dead center and getting it aligned would be easy, that's why I did it this way.

Next time I will do things differently.

HPOP is the equivelant of the injection pump... sorta. Only on 94.5 and later diesels known as powerstrokes.

Im going to guess youre a tooth off, they will run 180 out, but not worth a damn at all, i would be surprised if it has enough power to get out of first gear.

I followed the instructions from the "talk about timing" article from my first attempt to my third. This is a lot more difficult to do than I thought it was going to be.

Harmonic Balancer At Top Dead Center, Line Marked Up Exactly With The O:

Injection Pump Timing Gear Centered & Horizontal Mark Aligned With Housing:

Here's where I went wrong:

I didn't make sure I had compression to the #1 cylinder when setting the harmonic balancer.

I didn't understand what was meant by being "180" out until I understood how the 4 cycle engine works.

This task was only difficult because I didn't have a clue what I was doing when I started.

Apparently I am just a little slow at grasping these concepts.

Live and learn. Sounds like you got it figured out. I did the same thing the first injection pump i did... backhoe didnt run right for weeks lol.

lol.

I will keep on learning.

I got it running good now. I will fine tune the IP when I have access to the right equipment.

There is so much less blow by and white smoke now that I changed out the CDR Valve & Put the new IP in. I was getting random misfires at high RPM's because of the IP failing.

You warned me last year I would need to replace the IP when I did my Injectors. I'm glad I finally had the money to do it and keep this beast working for me.
