E99 F350 Starts Fine Idles Rough
Early '99 F350 CCLB dually.
I just got back from a run out to Dayton,OH. Truck ran fine that I could tell on the trip and, Sunday, I started the truck and went to the grocery store with the family and it seems she is shaking a little more at stoplights and, when it hits overdrive I fell like I'm on a real bumpy road until it gets over 45 mph. Thought bad tank of fuel so drained tank, did hutch mod, refilled with clean diesel and she's still shaking Longblock has about 42,000 on it. Everything was new except the turbo and the alternator when it went in. Have a 4" turboback and T/S 6 pos switch Changed recently: Oil: little over 1k ago Fuel Filter: about 1.5k ago Hutch mod done No check engine light. Buzz tested fine Will be doing cylinder contribution this afternoon. checked resistance on injectors at the valve cover harness, all injectors except for 2 and 4 were 3.2-3.3 ohms. Number 2 and 4 were 5.0-5.2 Any ideas? |
One symptom that I completely forgot about and, really didn't think was related is, the truck was rather hard starting when I shut it off and tried to restart it when it was at operating temperature.

Do you have access to a scan tool? Any OBD-II On-Board Diagnostics, Phase 2 Vehicle Media Communications Unit will monitor the PID's listed. Usually caused by low injection oil pressure or regulator (IPR) valve. High pressure oil is used to pressurize and inject the fuel into the cylinders--each injector is essentially its own injection pump. The IPR is a by-pass valve that controls the high oil pressure depending on demand. The ICP monitors the oil pressure in the LH head. Check for oil in the upper reservoir; it should be within one inch of the top; add oil as necessary. Verify that the correct oil is being used and that it is not thinned out. For no-start concerns check Injection Control Pressure (ICP) sensor readings with a scan tool or pressure gauge (500 min), or with DVOM at pins 87 to 91 (.83volt min) while cranking.
The following Data List Monitoring Parameters will assist in identifying your ICP, IPR, and IDM: ICPv Spec 0.20v - 0.30v (KOEO) ICP 500 PSI or 3.4 MPAM Minimum FUEL PW: 1 MS - 6 MS ( <1 / >6 IDM Suspect) DC% - Cranking NTE 20% / 65% is Closed. I have Autoenginuity. Below is a screencap from Idle this morning. Does this help? Fuel pressure at idle is 60PSI on the nose. Brand new bosch fuel pump as well.
I am beginning to suspect one of my injectors blew an o-ring and is leaking diesel into the oil. I went ahead and ordered new valve cover gaskets with the harnesses. Because it passes a buzz test I am thinking it is not the harness itself. https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.for...2001912047.jpg |
Checked resistance on injectors on the outside of the valve cover harness, injectors 1,3,5, and 7 were 3.2-3.3 ohms. Number 2 and 4 were 5.0-5.2.
From what I've read, anything over 5 ohms is bad. The truck has AD injectors in it if that means anything. Still learning the PSD stuff. Came from Mercedes diesels. |
You may have a couple issues.
1. The DC% is low, especially for 82.4*F. 2. > .5 Ω may just be a connection issue. 3. Check the Tin Nut on the IPR. If it's loose or missing, sometimes allows the Magnetic Coil to vibrate on the valve. Can you do a couple more tests? and add FPW to both? Do these at 140*F EOT 1. WOT with the same Parameters Set? 2. 3,000 RPM in neutral at OT . |

Will do. Guess we'll take the truck for groceries this morning.

I bought the truck in December, changed the filter almost immediately. Filter was black.
Swapped filter again when I started having this issue and it was still white after about 3,500 miles. |

Is the truck stock otherwise? Is it tuned for the AD's? If so, by whom? |
They came with the longblock that went into the truck. Correct, they are late 99-03? injectors.
The truck has a T/S 6pos switch with off the self tunes from Advance Diesel but, I pulled that and it was still missing/running bad on the stock tune in the PCM. The miss also occurs on whatever tune I'm set on. High idle as well. For what it's worth, the stock tune felt sluggish and, my trans shifted rather hard until I put the chip in. |

No idea on the change interval before I bought it. Longblock went in the truck in 2012 and based on the mileage currently on the truck and the mileage on the receipt from the trans rebuild (he rebuilt the trans when he had the junk motor out) the longblock should only have ~40k on it. I wouldn't think o-rings would crap the bed after only 40k.
