Btw thanks guys!
Also gunna keep my eyes open on eBay maybe someone selling a used Detroit locker or one out of an axle already - don't mine 200-300 right on now 550 has to wait

I don't think you meant to say "locker" but if you did, DON'T DO IT! Unless it's an air locker or something on demand, they are OK. Lockers are a no-no for towing. Limited slip, yes, will work decent for what you want.

BTW, you're welcome. Hope I helped.

87thhunter 02-22-2015 08:30 PM

No I didn't.....but when I think about it I wanna destroy the rear end and we'll everything else load the truck down and go around a few 180% turns, with my new locker.........

Now you are getting the picture! That's what I was talking about in my first post. Limited slip is OK. If you rebuild it and get it too tight (which is hard to do) it will be aggressive and almost be a locker. Not good for heavy loads. The Truetrack gets more agressive the longer you turn, but unless you are going around in tight circles it's nothing to worry about.

Thanks again man!<br />
Tomorrow I'm planing on looking for a used one, also luckily my towing is usually little to no tongue weight gravity wagons don't add any weight just a lot of rolling and 4 wheel drive sometimes struggles only because it's still empty so I like the limited slip idea a lot though.

Okay so what am i looking for with the HD axle??? is it just the 10.25 or is there a dana number that goes with it. Everyone talks about the front Dana 44 or dana 50 but never a number value to the rear end.
Im looking on ebay and find carriers but im not sure if they will fit.

Found a cheap used Dana 60 but i belive thats the front end, and of course i find TONS of used ones for my Grand cherokee.....i dont see towing 20-30k pounds with that

Sterling 10.25

87thhunter 02-23-2015 10:56 AM

Thanks man! and i see i can cheaply add it to the front axle.....but not many people selling well any i can find the rear carrier so i could make a true 4x4 truck.....if i wanted to tear the front axle apart.....stupid fords IFS idea..................

eakermeld 02-23-2015 10:57 AM

If you found a cheap D60 front BUY IT! They are getting harder to find and make great trading material. With one of those in good shape, you could trade it for a pristine Sterling 10.25 with LS and have money left over!

87thhunter 02-23-2015 10:59 AM

Well i find a cheap LS carrier for the D60.....i wish i could find a cheap front axle.......

Not sure what year the break is, but the older 10.25 had a short pinion, the later one have a long pinion that are more desirable.

eakermeld 02-23-2015 11:05 AM

92 down short, 93 up long. Long pinion is more desirable, less trouble with the yoke working loose. If you ever put in a new R&P you automatically get the long pinion. I have some of both running around and haven't had any trouble with either one. I myself wouldn't turn down a reasonably priced pre-93 for that reason alone.

try an aussie locker if all you use it for is towing. Ive heard from lots of guys they are very well built and never fail. And the installation is very simple. the only real complaint I have heard is they make a very audible ratcheting noise during turns but thats what you get with an automatic locker. They are very affordable as well.

I just bought off ebay (hope it works) http://www.ebay.com/itm/131419184067?_trksid=p2060778.m2749.l2649&ssPageName=STRK%3AMEBIDX%3AITHe says it fits any 10 1/4 -10 1/2 steriling from 85-present
If anyone knows different PLEASE tell me so i can cancel it!
The posi trac alone should hopefully be what i want - a little better grip on take off with a trailer and a little better 2wheel drive traction

87thhunter 02-23-2015 03:19 PM

Thanks again and again guys. I wanted the Detroit trutrac - but i got the LS for half the price used and with my budget it at least IS some improvement, the truck has pulled EVERYTHING i've ever put behind it - i just wanted "a little" more traction when i needed it i have spun front and rear tires on the dirt pulling wagons i should not pull 25k pounds, no tonge wait complete stop on a small hill you spin your tires on loose gravel, but it did pull it none the less..........

Only question i go threw a lot of mud pulling the wagons, - Will a LS kick in while im already moving 10-15 mph - meaning your not stuck yet oh crap its slowing down tires are spinning, but does the LS kick in at this point or only when you first take off
