motor plug-in sheathing
 

Noticed today, while ripping IC out to clean and install my R.R. boots, that the sheathing around the motor plug-in wire was completely gone/cracked/ coming apart. So, with room to work, i wire-loomed it all up. Just a head-ups to those that plug-in at night, to take a gander at it..

So long as both wires are in separate loom you're okay. If you've covered both with the same loom there is still a possibility of it shorting.

No way would I trust it. How can you know what it looks like inside the molded plug? That is where the unseen damage occurs that leads to the fires. The poorly designed flat cord bends back and forth over the years gradually breaking the strands of wire inside where it joins the molded end until the connection is so reduced that enough heat is generated to start a fire. A bare cord will only short out and trip a breaker.


Get a new cord or do the Marinco mod, your old cord is just a ticking time bomb.

appreciate the concerns, guys. I feel i have nothing to worry about because the wires themselves, looked good. It was the sheathing that was heat impacted and brittle/breaking apart. Also, being in So-Cal, i have yet to use it (5yrs) and think i should be ok, with not using it. It was a mere distraction, that i saw the damage, which i felt i should share with members that do plug-in at night...:-X22

Always plug into a GFI circuit. It will trip quickly in the event of a circuit imbalance!
