Adventures in Retirement

}> I've been threatening to do this thread for awhile and now that my photobucket, computor and camera are full of pics and it's becoming a pita, I decided it's time to do the thread. I also have 4 projects on the go and this will get them together in one thread and save me some brain stress.
Sept 3, 2012 I was untying my work boots, felt light headed and wound up passed out on the floor. My cats brought me to enough that I could do the 911, pushed wrong button and got a cabbie instead, wound up paying $20 to get to the emerge room instead of $680 ambulance fee, whew. I have Chronic Obstructive Lung & Pulminary disease (the capital letters spell out my last name LOL!), was diagnosed 12 years earlier so I was expecting to have a retirement day. Had whats referred to as an oxygen deprivation stroke, it happens when your blood oxygen level drops to about 50% of normal, most times your toast. Lucky for me I was 51 at the time and have a stubborn as a mule get up and go attitude, I'm also somewhat pig headed. What saved my butt that day was that I was building a stone wall with 30 to 80lb stones and my cat Frankie jumping on my head, pawing my face and howling. So that was my retirement, took 21/2 months of exercising, walking and 24 hour a day o2 to get strong enough to save my azz from getting mugged. Seeing the reflection in a window of someone coming at me from behind with a clenched fist helped, them M cylinder o2 shoulder bottles make for a good weapon also. Forgot to mention that I have a rude sense of humour. So now you know the sob story, on with the show.
Project 1: Henry aka Glens ghost.
http://i1343.photobucket.com/albums/...ps3897ad7e.jpghttp://i1343.photobucket.com/albums/...ps81947ac5.jpg
This was my work truck for 7 years, its a f350 160" wheel base dually dump truck with a 400, 4 speed. Rust free as it was never used in the winter or on rainy days, only had 112,ks on it. Landlord decided to renovate my bathroom in December and the contractor took 8 weeks to do a 3 week job, this is normal in Calgary. I was living at her place while he was at mine getting drunk with the guys who poured water and sand down my carb and slashing my tires, another normal Calgary thing. Henry got retired and now he's being converted to a 5th wheel RV puller with some extensive, motor, body, frame and suspension modifications. I've had some kinda modified vehicles before but nothing that was built by me for me totally.
http://i1343.photobucket.com/albums/...ps4d3d36dd.jpg
This is the ugly green donor machine. It' a 89 f350 dually, at this point it's donating it's frame, front suspension and maybe the fuel system and part of the rear suspension. About the only part that has gone to the recycler is the front of the cab, doors, hood and rad support. Later in this thread this thing will show up again. The guys who wrecked Henry's motor got to this one to.

ready for strip down

the plate steel gets saved along with all the ribs and rails, my neighbour Mark gets the wood for his fire pit.
and thats all there is to it

start of green donor strip down
http://i1343.photobucket.com/albums/...psa81083e0.jpg
everything got saved and this frame is so short compared to what I'm used to. I bought and sold commercial furniture most of my life and I'm used to long wheelbase 1 tons and 5 tons, furniture is light so the bigger the box the better.

Henry, meet green donor machine. Rear of trucks are even, just a bit of a difference

My spare lung
Front clip gone and its time to move the cab out of the way. I have a tendancy to be creative with thought, in other words I think on my feet and make due with what I got. Sometimes a come a long, rope and a tree are some of the best tools in the world. As we go through this thread you'll soon come to the conclusion that I've got a lot of crap/stuff, in this case its planking and metal stakes. Actually this combination of work ware will pop up on a regular basis, please don't laugh and eat popcorn at the same time. Heres how I move big things without a hoist system.
http://i1343.photobucket.com/albums/...psa81083e0.jpg
This pic again, note the planking
http://i1343.photobucket.com/albums/...ps6078a72d.jpghttp://i1343.photobucket.com/albums/...psc40602a4.jpghttp://i1343.photobucket.com/albums/...ps05e5e0f2.jpg
Wasn't that difficult, easier than trying to recover the pics that I deleted from photobucket, not a good idea. On to the next edit, this is where I do the cab shuffle. The ugly green cab got cut up and I saved the back wall, the only thing that went to the recycler were the doors, roof and fire wall everything else went to storage and will be getting used as I get this thread caught up to date.

I'm baack, heres a shot of my safety officer Sally.
http://i1343.photobucket.com/albums/...ps94e22656.jpg
There she is in all her glory, she does a really good imitation of a 9lb black squirrel
While the cab is out of the way I decided to dress up the frame a bit, all I did was brush it down and gave it a gas wash to get rid of the grease and wiped it down with paint thinner. Then it got the rocker guard treatment. This rocker guard goes on sale at the crappy tire store on a regular basis and I pickup a dozen cans or so at a time, it comes in biege and black and hardens up yet stays flexible. This stuff works as sound deadener and makes for easy bodywork finishing on the bottom 4" of your vehicle as it covers 80 grit with one light coat.
http://i1343.photobucket.com/albums/...psdec307a6.jpghttp://i1343.photobucket.com/albums/...psb70e28b9.jpghttp://i1343.photobucket.com/albums/...ps4ee9d15a.jpghttp://i1343.photobucket.com/albums/...ps4de80b4c.jpg
This is the start of one of those danger city kitty ideas. How do you move your mint condition rust free front heavy cab that's at a bad angle, from one truck to another. Easy, just use a rope and a come a long, oh yeah, it helps if you have a 11' ladder and a 6' walk board and some planking. Theres a benefit to not drinking on the job, dumb, desperate ideas work when your sober.
http://i1343.photobucket.com/albums/...ps749d7b45.jpghttp://i1343.photobucket.com/albums/...ps4d34f5c0.jpghttp://i1343.photobucket.com/albums/...ps2d74120a.jpghttp://i1343.photobucket.com/albums/...ps7f467a19.jpghttp://i1343.photobucket.com/albums/...ps38333df8.jpghttp://i1343.photobucket.com/albums/...ps6b4e7892.jpghttp://i1343.photobucket.com/albums/...ps31ee227c.jpghttp://i1343.photobucket.com/albums/...ps8f734773.jpghttp://i1343.photobucket.com/albums/...psf21691e5.jpg
And its on. The ladder and walk board sure came in handy, the weird looking blocks are from my concrete days, I've used them to lift a garage 2' so that I could put in a 18" pony wall, used to have a bunch but a moron thought they were scrap wood and used them for a bonfire. This town suffers from severe moronitis, I really miss living on the acreage.
The cab mounts look like they line up but when you put everything together you find that the 78 firewall touches the back of the motor, the rad support doesnt have the same mounts and the rad and fan shroud are way to high for the 351. Good thing I kept the frame horns from the 78.
You can line everything up by playing with the front cab mounts and redrilling the rad support to fit the 89 front frame mounts. When you look inside the engine bay you'll see the firewall tight to the motor 1" clearance and the 78 rad support holds the rad 5" higher than the 351. I bought a 75 Scab with a 460 auto that was going to be the body and motor donor for this project, I made the mistake of having problems blacking out when I stood up and wound up in the hospital for 3 days. Our tough Calgarian vandals took the opportunity to trash the truck, steal the plates and called the city and had it towed as a derelict vehicle. 6 weeks earlier they poured water and sand down this carb also. The instigator doesnt live in this neighbourhood and the vandal is a meth freak that has Canada wide warrants out for him. Our so called Police protect them and blame their victims and tell us we're the problem, theres 3 of us that are being targeted, 2 get their houses trashed, 1 is a 85lb senior who had a stroke the other has brain cancer. Now that the lies these 2 pedalled have been corrected I get treated with respect from my neighbours and the block now knows who the problem is. By the time this thread gets caught up a correction program will be well under way as the problem is under control and it has become my game now. The jags are both out of the hood and by the end of summer one will be back in Ontario and the other is going to be watching his life go down the tubes and I get to have a good laugh all spring and summer.
Thank you slik for letting me know that I screwed up my pics, should have known that photobucket was on a catalogue template. The bastages have to make money somehow and storage space is a commodity.

4x4slik 02-18-2015 08:28 AM

Before you go much further, alot of your pictures are missing. Might I suggest some folders on photobucket to organize them a little more. Then they can stay in place. It's a pain to get started, but works out a lot better in the long run.

Great thread so far. Wish I lived closer, I would of loved helping you catch the vandals on camera. As a security and surveillance tech, my favorite party is video proof of a crime. Video's from my systems have been used for many things including prosecuting a guy who shot up a local bar. Luckily no one was killed, but still dificult to watch especially when you know all the people in the video, including 2 of my brothers.

thanx for the heads up on the pics slik, guess I got to reload them all so this will take a while. Will be back. Kind of frustrating considering that I previewed my posts before I hit submit reply.

privateer, eh 02-19-2015 01:03 AM

Glad your brothers didn't get hurt, was checking out camera systems but retail wise they are out of my budget. Have bid on some at the auction but people are really horny for them and the cheap low q systems go for near retail. I do have a territorial security system that shows up on occasion but it may not get the message to enough people. Either way there hasn't been any problems from these goofs for about 6 months now but that's going to come to an end whether they like it or not. The next post brings katy p into the scene and intros start of Luigi's nightmare, he's the instigator.:-jammin

If somebody hit just one of my vehicles like that my daughter would only see me during "visiting hours", you have more patience than I do.

Sorry about your health, but as with my wasted back, we make do.

Enjoying watching the trucks come together and looking forward to how the story unfolds.

Project 2 Katy P roars

Took me awhile to get back to this, I get headaches from welding, been using flux core wire as most of what I'm doing is under windy conditions. The next time I get my arterial blood gasses tested I'll do some welding first and see what kind of changes it makes in my test results. I work on the trucks as much as I can but during the winter months it's hard to get much done. The meds I take ( Spiriva, Symbicort, Salbutamol) have a combined side effect due to 2 of them having a steroid in them. They trigger some genetic problems in some people, my Grampa had late onset Parkinsons, as a result I get to do the gulping act and sometimes my hands act like they're trying to grab stuff, lasts about an hour. Then I get to go on a 2 -3 mile walk to keep my cardio in shape, I don't mind the walk as it allows me the chance to socialize with enjoyable people. That wipes out my morning and with the short days I get maybe 3 - 4 hours of actual work time in if it's 0c or better. Any colder than -10 and it's a shut in day and nothing gets done.
To be honest with you Odd, I,m not all that patient, just have a well practiced farmer mentality. Plant a seed, 100 days later you cut it done and let it dry a bit, pick it up and shake it from it's husk, throw it in a truck, take some to the elevator to pay the bills and put the rest in a silo, whats in the silo is what you live off and that has to last til the middle of the next season if you want to survive. Cull the bad out of your crop, cull the bad from your herd. Most of the seeds are planted and the culling starts soon. Heres one of the seeds.
A couple of days before Luigi got Wayne to put the sand and water down my carb I picked up a 75 CS with a 390 auto but had it parked at the Poor Boy tire shop. Went to an auction and picked up about $1200 worth of new xmas stocking stuffers, cards and other small giftware for at most $350 and used the Scab to pick it up and donated it to the Sunrise Community Link as part of they're xmas gift distribution program. These girls are underfunded, work to hard and deal mostly with poor families and working first year immigrants, they weed out the druggies in a PC way. Got home and had no place to park, will explain why later, that night the Scab got the water and sand treatment.
And now the picture part of the story.
http://i1343.photobucket.com/albums/...ps1b006c37.jpghttp://i1343.photobucket.com/albums/...psfbc50b63.jpghttp://i1343.photobucket.com/albums/...ps542d4b2a.jpg
This is Katy. Normally I like quiet trucks but this one has a magna flow on it, when I drove it home I turned on the radio and it was playing the Katy P song Roar and with the mood I was in it kinda chose its own name.
See this thing, want to know why I built it.
http://i1343.photobucket.com/albums/...psfe363e54.jpghttp://i1343.photobucket.com/albums/...ps7afd3605.jpg
This is why
http://i1343.photobucket.com/albums/...ps729eebfb.jpghttp://i1343.photobucket.com/albums/...ps3352a8f3.jpg
Luigi is a genius, when he's targeting someone on my street he drags Mohammeds derelict car out of the back yard and parks it in front of your house. He knows that the alley turns into a near impassable glacier and most of the cars that park in back wind up parking on the street. 2 car garages turn into 1 car shops, parking becomes a premium especially when Ken has a houseful of drunk fellow 1 day a week contractors. When he did this every normal person knew that I was being targeted just like some of them were. It also let them know that the stories that were being told about me by the teller at billy's store were BS. When your vehicle is out of eyesight of your house Luigi's henchman Wayne slashes your tires, smashes your windows and pours crap down your carb or does other underhood damage. All at between 2 - 3 am, now you know why cameras don't help. Notice the liscence plate, this pic was taken Feb 2014, the stickers say Mar 2013. The car is up to date in insurance and registration but the stickers are on the plate of a car thats o/o by a drunk who either has no liscence or can't get insurance, it's an old scam. According to the criminal protection service, Mohammed lost his stickers and they knew this without even asking him his alibi. This car is powered by a tow rope or some times by 3 drunks pushing it. I supplied the power one day, the car with the stickers ran into a piece of cast steel, sharp on one end, flat on the other. I think it had a stick attached to it. Heres the power unit for Mohammeds car.
http://i1343.photobucket.com/albums/...psf9c1e168.jpg
The people in my hood that cold shouldered me for 3.5 years now like me and that part of the street is normal. Luigi gave the new neighbours crippled mother a hard time one day and he gave his landlord a list of options as to Luigi and Moe and Dec 1 2014 Moe moved a block and a half down the street. I've known the guy across the street from him since I moved to Calgary 13 years ago. These guys aren't young punkers, they're my age and a bit older, they're part of the 1/3 of Calgarians that were born this way.
PROJECT 3, LUIGI'S NIGHTMARE
One of the routes that I walk takes me to the A&W and it's a bit of a social club in the A.M as theres always a group of seniors or people like me that have been retired, having coffee and joking around. Its a good place to start our day as most of us have a late start. One day I get a shoulder slap and the "look, look, look, that's what you need to do" from Bob. Sitting across the street is a 3 ton flat deck with a 16' "Give your life to Christ" billboard on it. We laughed about it for an hour and the idea went dead until I saw an ad on kijiji for a 79 sandwich truck. I had the money but the financial timing was off, had a grant but you got to spend the money and wait to get reimbursed. The price dropped to $325 because nobody knew how to find his acreage, the final reimbursement on the grant was due but I had a cleanup to do for my landlord. This cleanup had a ton of change laying around the house, so between my coffee can of change, the clean up change and my landlady conning the guy standing in line behind me at the change counter, the truck payed for itself before I even bought it. Got it home and modified it a bit and now this is what it looks like.

3 guesses what goes into here. Last pic took over a minute to transfer from the bucket to here so I guess I'm bouncing on and off line again, next post we go back to Katy for awhile.

Ahh, I remember reading the thread about the sandwich truck purchase.

Katy P gets a make over

Due to the destruction of my original parts truck I needed to pull the box off of my camper special and donate it to my retirement project and build a flat deck for it. Well that got changed a bit when friends of mine explained that if it was a true flat deck I would use it to its full abilities and wind up giving myself a heart attack. I have a hard time saying no to some deals, my tool shed is one of those deals. Its a new never used 90"x90" insulated with drywall and basic electrical system, hardie board clad doghouse that was built for a wealthy customer. Customer came to Canada for the week, didn't like the home reno going on and changed their mind on the style and had most of it torn down, redesigned and rebuilt. The doghouse had been finished the week before so I said "sure, give me $200 and I'll get rid of it for you" gave the zoom boom operator a bottle of rye and scotch to load it and brought it home on Henry's deck. Thats why I now have to set limitations on myself. Thats why theres wheel wells, box sides and a tailgate on the new box. On with the show
http://i1343.photobucket.com/albums/...ps6f8383be.jpg
Them blue boards have been forms, deckboards and side panels on 2 trucks and before they were cut down they were used as roller planks to get the doghouse off of Henry's back. Everything gets used well around this joint

This has been made from the old decks from the 89 and Henry's dump box.

And that's all it takes to build a box, 20 minutes work max, if your drunk and stoned you can make 10 a day. End of this post

Katy starts getting make up and plastic surgery

Okay the 20 minute truck box is built, lifted it up and pulled it back so that I can paint the front of the headache rack and do the bodywork on the back of the cab, then cab paint. The paint procedure was as follows, wire brush rust, spray on rustcheck, spray on beige rocker guard, paint on white. Let dry for 5 days due to cold weather and start body work on cab. Tape off white, if warm enough work on cab til its warm enough to spray on black rocker guard. If warm work on cab and paint on black on day it's warm enough to paint, work on cab til paint is dry enough and its warm enough to pull tape. Hmmmmm winter, nice way to get f-all done.

Yeah it's crappy welding but I'm doing this in the wind using 030 flux core and my amperage and wire speeds dont go low enough to do a nice job. Everything got fiber glassed after being welded to fill holes and I wont have to worry about bondo falling out. It's getting the rocker guard treatment so I wont have to worry about the lower body work.

Got the replacement idea from 77&79F250 and so I dug out my old office mat. It got chipped in the last move and I'm a snob and wouldn't let it in the house. This turned out to be the exact thickness for L&W's window, not worried about the haze as its getting the 360 grit and some candy black if it will stick to the test piece, if not it may get shoe wax.

And now your pretty much up to date on my projects. Theres a few things that I've been doing to get the next series of jobs done. The front clip comes off of Katy and gets replaced with part of the cage trucks front end, the cage truck gets an ugly pill. Henry loses his old rad support and inner fender wells.
Heres another reason for the cage truck, excuse the pics the lens on my phone is scratched, hence new camera.

I'm not allowed to show interior pics because the inside of the house isn't visible to the general public as they walk by, legal liability. Tamarra had the Sheriff, a restraining order and eviction order on her side. Wayne had a Canada wide warrant and the CPS, Criminal Protection Service, on his side. Cps over rode the Sheriff and told Tamarra to live on her mothers couch. Tamarra owned the house. Wayne and Luigi got 3 weeks to renovate the house, this is what they did. This is why I'm p'od and seem a bit obsessed with this situation. Now you know where things stand and a lot of the reasons why they stand there, my harping on this is over and from now on its a source of cheap entertainment for me. This game is over when I decide it's over, they only came after me when they thought I was crippled. Their both out of the hood so far and I know where they think they hide out. Luigi has a wife that he goes home to every night for now. End of rant, entertainment from now on, thank you for your patience if your still following this thread.

That box turned out nice, glad to see other people "recycling" materials.

For what the truck is there's no concern about the welds as long as they hold, I wouldn't even attempt to weld body panels with flux core.

What F^&*^% mess that poor house is.

For what its worth, if I wasn't working outside I wouldn't be using this flux core:-X21. Buut the cost of argon would bankrupt me and the welds would be a lot worse looking, another reason that I can't wait to get back to working on Henry. Must admit though, its probably increasing my welding skills. On that window idea, I don't mind if I have to weld in that corner piece between the window frame and door as it would strengthen the window frame, that may expand the vehicle option.

Tamarra was born with an 85+% hearing loss and was a special needs teacher until she was diagnosed with brain cancer. At the time of the house she was just starting her 3rd round of chemo. Saw her 3 weeks ago and her hair was starting to look healthy and her cheeks were starting to fill up, still was pale and tired easily. All in all pretty good shape after going 3 rounds with Mike tyson.

Saw an ad in princess auto flyer that showed a 2 ton floor standing gantry crane, been threatening to build one for almost a year but thought I was short on metal, looks like I thought wrong. Think I found my cold weather project.

I'm up to something, seeing as my jags are out of the hood I should be free of bylaw hassles. I went to princess auto and saw a gantry system, so guess what I'm going to do. This is the last of the -20c spells so in a week the gravel will be unthawed enough for me to dig a pair of trenches and put in a guide system. the shelter isn't finished yet so tomorrow I get the last of the major work done and put in a work light and then it's back to rebuilding the front of Katy during the day and an hour or 2 reworking the interior. You may be interested in this gantry system Odd as you only have to clear the cab of your truck by a foot. I was going to do the overhead track but it was going to be to much metal and work, plus I didn't think that an a frame was stable enough, but I have a way that should work given what I saw at princess auto. Stay tuned this could be a Homer play but then again it could work. Porkchops, porkchops must have porkchops.

So, after a week of extended cold weather I finally got some work done. My shelter needed to be reinforced and I wound up putting in a grade beam, all thats left to do is make a pair of end walls and open up the common wall of the shelters and that part will be done. On windy days I get to do other things like stripping parts off of the truck up front and prep up parts for Katy. The front end is rotted pretty badly as one of the previous OP's decided to take out the fender liners. Don't know why morons do that unless they like having water and mud up inside the engine bay, sure rots out the front end. Got the last of the cab body rust repairs welded up today and glassed in the edges of my welds and the oddball tight spots that I'm in no shape to contort myself into. Now I can actually start doing the body work that people see. Still have a couple of warm days till it cools off again so depending what the wind is like, I'm either on the truck or shelter.

Decided to use a piece of waste cut checker plate to fix up the cab mount, had to replace half the bottom of the mount all the way up to the bolt. Figured the plate would be strong enough for a base plate, pita welding it in as the biscuit burns fairly easily, did 3/8" welds then cooled it off and started again until I was past the biscuit. Sure as hell stunk.

Got a lot of use out of this back wall and still have lots of metal left, especially curved and corner pieces.

and thats the end of the friggin rust repairs, as you can see by the welds this fiber glass routine saves me a lot of finishing and detail work. I use those flapper discs on my grinder to knock down the glass so that saves a lot of finishing time. Dug out my suction cups as I get to play musical windshields in the near future. Next big job is my rusty roof and window frame. til later
