diesel swap worth it?

I got to thinking tonight and I'm a farmer and will be getting a bigger tractor soon and it will more than likely be a diesel. I'm going to be putting a bigger motor in my truck and was wondering if it would be more "economical" or better for me to buy one type of fuel instead of gas and diesel. Does this idea make sense to anyone else or is this just me? I think so since I can get diesel fuel as a farm fuel and it not be taxed so I could probably fill up the truck tanks to if I were to switch to diesel.

I'd probably swap in an old idi from a rotted out truck or something that I could get the tranny and all that with to for fairly cheap.

I forgot to mention that the truck is a daily driver/work and farm truck with the occasional off roading.. I use the truck alot and haul alot with it like hay and metal and all that.

Also If I don't go to diesel then I'll be running a built 360 so fuel mileage isn't exactly on my side but not sure how it would be with a diesel but I'm sure not great. Thanks

Makes sense, but be aware running untaxed diesel on the road will get you in deep doo doo, and they do check it. Untaxed has a red dye in it.

One day a Cummins 6B will be in Brutus.....one day.....

The dreams I have of one day putting a Cummins in it..........

How often do they check it? I know a few guys (not the best role models and some are theives) that run u taxed and never got stopped. I think the one did though... I'll have to ask him about it

The fine can be thousands of dollars.

BruteFord 02-17-2015 09:46 PM

Here the fine is $10/gallon or $1000 whichever is GREATER, so the minimum fine is $1000. The per gallon fine is capacity, not fuel level. And if you have a home tank it can include the capacity of that tank and other vehicles.

eakermeld 02-17-2015 09:48 PM

The fine is per gallon, and they do not believe that the tanks only hold 19 gallons!

FWIW ATF is commonly used as an additive in diesel fuel and is of course red. I haven't yet had to make that argument but wonder if it would work.

Admitting to putting ATF in the tank makes it worse. I believe the comment was "....and you didn't pay road tax on that either!" Used engine oil in the fuel tank will also get you a similar fate.

I'm guessing this happened to u?

All the bio-diesel people are getting cracked on too. I have ran filtered used motor oil many times.

Does this diesel swap seem like a good idea to anyone else?

i would do a diesel swap in an instant. my opinion is an IDI is a much more reliable engine and cheaper to run than a gas engine.
check with your state DOT, you may be able to run non taxed fuel if you have farmer plates on the truck.

I wouldn't need to do all to much to get an idi in it right? New motor mounts the I can do the wiring

And yes if I have farmer plates I believe you can run untaxed fuel in PA

I did an IDI swap into a Bronco and I swapped a 460 into my F150. I like the 460 better, but then my tractor is gas as well.

no, trans won't bolt up either.
