Bell housing adapter plate?
I will be putting a 4 speed in my truck in place of the c6 that is in it now. The truck I will probably buy for parts is a 1972-76 f250 with a 360 big Block and I believe a t18 or t19 transmission. I was planning on putting a 351w in the truck when I swap transmissions but I'm not sure if I could get maybe an adapter plate so the big block bell housing pattern fits onto the small block motor? Or could I get a different bell housing? Is it possible to make and adapter plate? Or should I just put the big block in my truck along with the new transmission?

That's not a good donor truck. You need a pedal assay from your gen truck. What year is it? A zf5 5 speed would be doable

Over drive is so worth it.

As OEM, your '87 would have had the ZF and a hydraulic clutch. You would be able to make the swap with factory parts.
Buy new master, lines and slave cylinders, bleed them right and you should not have serious troubles. Use old banged up junkyard parts that have been sitting for years....well, you can buy troubles cheaper. Making a clutch linkage for your truck would also be an issue as your engine may not have the boss for the ball that the z-bar slips on to, and your frame probably does not have the holes for the bracket that holds the other end. Plus any z-bar you pull out of a prior generation truck may or may not angle out correctly....on and on. |
If you drive on the hwy, it means 55 MPH at 2500 or 70 MPH at 2500. Big difference.
A 4spd truck gets old on trips. No, hydraulic clutches are GTG and while you hear of a leak once in a while the smoothness and self adjusting nature make them very good to have. ZF5s are fairly expensive in salvage yards. A rusty or non-running donor truck may be a better way to go. |
If I can find a zf5 donor truck for cheap then I would use that transmission and I'm still looking and I have to look at the other truck better just to make sure I can use the clutch linkage and all that.
But back to my original question: is there an adapter plate I could buy or make for the transmission? |
actually most F150's came with the smaller/lighter mazda 5 speed, not the ZF 5 speed.

You would need to find a small block bell housing to bolt the 4 speed to a 351w. There aren't any adapters made.

no. for a 4.9, 5.0 and 5.8 uses one bell housing bolt pattern.
then you have the 351M, 400, 429, 460 bolt pattern, and the diesel bolt pattern. the 360 is a FE block. but i am not sure if the FE block bolt pattern cross matches to any of the others. you need to use a trans designed for your series engine. there is no "big block" "small block" thing with fords, that is a chevy thing. fords go by engine series. |

So a small block bell housing will just bolt right up to the transmission in place of the big block bell housing?
