1978 Ford F250 400 oil pan
 

Hey everyone... I spent the past couple of hours searching old posts, and couldn't find anything on the topic. - Apologies in advance if my search wasn't sufficient.

I need to order a new oil pan from LMC truck, as I don't have a ton of time to go to a bunch of junk yards to pull one.

They have two oil pan options for the 1978 F250:

40-4608 (1) Oil Pan w/ Plug 240 300 4WD F-Series 73-79

40-4606 (1) Oil Pan w/ Plug 351M 400 2WD F-Series 77-79

Which one can I use to replace what I have? I have a 4WD 400, which apparently isn't an option.

the 351m/400 is the one you want,your 400 is a 400.:-X22

Thanks Bud. That's what I thought - I didn't think the drivetrain had much to do with the oil pan, but I wanted to make sure before I plunked down some cash!

Is your pan a front or rear sump?

I'm pretty sure its a front sump. I'll post some photos once I get to the appropriate number of posts...

if your truck has a front sump now than either will fit. :-X22

This is a picture taken from the front underneath of the truck. You can see the holes in the pan around the plug, and to the left of the plug. Oil filter on the right.

This is a photo taken from the passenger side, looking down from above into the engine compartment. You can see the top passenger side of the oil pan, basically exploded. No idea how that happened.

If either will fit, which should I pick??? Ahhhh so many options! :-huh ;)

that looks to be a rear sump, if so you want to stick with that. Some trucks clearance is a problem with the front sump. You can also by an after market pans from JEGS,SUMMIT. The clevland engines have the same pan also. But they dont come with holes.

I seen a used oil pan on E-Bay for 351m-400 has the screw in dipstick.

It kind of looks like a connecting rod broke on it, pull the spark plugs directly above the hole on both sides of the engine and put a long wire in each plug hole and see if the pistons are moving by turning it over by hand.

I guess if you shine a light in the hole you might be able to look also
