2017 Ford F150 Raptor
This new Raptor looks like a jewel... 2017 Ford F-150 Raptor: First Look - PickupTrucks.com News
http://www.leftlanenews.com/ford-f-150-raptor-2017.html Enjoy.... |
I read about it Monday. It's supposed to have the 2nd generation 3.5 Ecoboost engine. The Ecoboost going into the next Ford GT is reported to be putting out at least 600 HP.

Plus the 10 speed transmission in the Raptor |
I like it and all, especially the tailgate and bumpers. But I can't help but wish that it looked more like the Atlas concept truck.
|
Most of the comments on the press releases revolve around the new eco boost engine but I'm curious about the 10 speed transmission. Seems like it would only be in each gear for a couple seconds at most. I'm familiar with CVT's from the ATV world which when tuned properly can put the power to the ground very effectively but a 10 speed auto transmission sounds horrible. Someone please educate me how this transmission won't be annoying to drive with day in day out?
|
I've test drove a Jeep Grand Cherokee with the EcoDiesel and their new ZF8 auto and a 2014 Ram 1500 5.7L Hemi with the same ZF8, both shifted smoothly and really had no troubles at all. So the new 10 speed should feel very smooth and hope it has a nice granny low (5:1 or 6:1) with a double OD.

My wife likes the look of this truck, and I am starting my down payment savings account today!

Ford GT gets sexy shape and EcoBoost power [w/videos] |
So if they can get over 600 HP out of the EcoBoost for the GT why won't they boost it up some in the F150/Raptor (no pun intended)? Still an insane amount of power and I hope that there won't be any reliability issues with the GT pumping out that kind of power.
|
I'm sure someone will figure out how to boost the 3.5L Ecoboost to 600 HP.
|
Simply a fine looking machine. As much sense as it makes NOT to own one, I want one. :)

600hp in that 3.5L is what 171 and change horsepower per liter? Are the new 3.5s using Compact Graphite Iron blocks or is that only the 2.7L getting that and the PSD?
|
I'm not sure if I like the Terrain Management system. Is that going to replace the part time transfer case with something that isn't driver selected other than the "mode" it's in or is it going to be in addition to the 2wd/4wd/4lo selector? Other than that it looks great.

The new 10-speed won't dig quite that deep. 1st gear is going to be around 4.7:1 based on this analysis of the Ford's patent filing. First won't be a whole lot lower than the Ram 8 speed, but overdrive (triple-overdrive!!) reaches a bit higher than the ZF for a slightly greater overall spread. 1st - 4.696 2nd - 2.985 3rd - 2.179 4th - 1.801 5th - 1.539 6th - 1.288 7th - 1.000 8th - 0.852 9th - 0.689 10th - 0.636 R - -4.786 Ratio spread - 7.384 This is in comparison to Ford's current 6R140 with 1st at 3.97:1 and 6th at 0.67:1 for a ratio spread of 5.92 or the ZF8HP used in the Ram trucks with 1st at 4.714:1 and 8th at 0.667:1 for a ratio spread of 7.067. |

Well said... Nothing like trying to ignore a good lookin truck. |
From what I have read, I'm not hot on the terrain management crap. Torque on demand transfer case. That sounds like an all wheel drive system to me. Between that and the electronics I don't care for I won't care to own one.
|
Love it
Looks better then I imaged the next gen would look like. |
I don't see the benefit of triple OD. A low first gear would be a benefit for heavy towing since iirc these are going to be used in the super duty class. I could see a 0.59:1 OD.
|
There is no doubt the Ecoboost will make the truck perform better. Lower center of gravity and more power and torque. And that's fine from a performance perspective, but the real purpose of the raptor is to be a "big boy toy" and it seems appropriate that such a toy should have a rowdy engine. I have an EcoBoost in my F150 and it is a great engine but the noises won't bring a smile to your face. Raptor really needs a rowdy V8 to make the experience complete.

Will a V8 be an option at least?

Fugly tailgate, just saying
|
Crying fin shame.
Took a fine off road vehicle with a V-8 and turned it into just another mall cruiser with a turboed weed eater motor. Rice burner honda with bigger wheels. Bet the truck even comes equipped with fake V-8 big boy sound! Get the mall rated stickers out! |

Yeah! bring back the flathead :) You could always spend the 60k on an older V8 and have a pretty great truck. With all the regulations, standards, and lawsuits today, that Ford is willing to produce this truck at all is amazing to me. This vehicle will likely be an absolutely incredible truck with even better off road performance than anything they have ever produced in the past. I would buy one in a minute if I could justify it. To get your head around this; my modest econobox Focus has a weed eater 4 cylinder in it and with a few exceptions, over 40 mph, it will eat up the V8 cars and trucks made just ten years ago like so much sushi. I love a big V8 as much as anyone. I grew up building them and racing them but time and tech moves on. |
That poor puny little 3.5L sure takes a lot of crap from people who haven't taken the time to study how sturdy it's built.
So fricken what of it doesn't sound like a V-8. It sure as hell acts like a big V-8. |
That little 3.5 sure can haul heavy loads without much fuss compared to any V8 I ever owned. The ONLY thing I miss is the V8 exhaust note, but I don't ever see myself going back to a non turbo pickup again. It's either the Ecoboost or a Powerstroke in a Superduty.
|
Has anyone just taken the stock muffler out and put a Flow master, cherry bombs or Magnaflow on an EcoBoost? Can't imagine it sounding too bad.
|
There are a ton of clips on youtube.
|
It is true that the 3.5 Ecoboost is a potent little package. The generation that will be going in the new Ford GT was developed by Roush/Yates Engines in partnership with Ford Racing for the Daytona Prototype class of the now IMSA TUDOR racing series. They boys at Roush/Yates Engines personally told me, that IMSA would only let them "dial in" 600 HP to the tune....but that they ( Roush/Yates ) had dyno tested it reliably much higher than that. The new 3.5 Ecoboost in the Raptor is said by Ford to have more HP and torque than the 6.2.....so I'm going to guess that the Ecoboost in the new Raptor will come in with at least 450 HP...maybe a bit higher and 440 torque.

The issue with any turbo is that the exhaust is always muffled by the turbos themselves so they end up sounding like a turbo only louder. Not that there is anything wrong with that. :)

I definitely does not sound like a V8 - at least in this video. |

If the Raptor ends up having EFR turbos, then look out..... |

The Ford GT has EFR turbos on it. They are seriously dialing back the power to keep it as low as 600Hp. That is an 850Hp set of turbos on the engine. I'm guessing GT owners will be able to fix that 600Hp flaw with a $400 tuner.

The race car is 600 Hp, at least it was last year. Still doesn't change what those turbos can do.
