Help with my 59 F250 4x4
 

I am looking at a 59 F250 4x4. I already own one, but it is one heartbeat away from the ultimate end. Anyway, the one I just located is a pretty good restoration, but with some problems ....

Steering gear is pretty loose. I know to try to adjust, but is there a source for a rebuilt?

Brake drums - I had located some years ago - for $60 apiece - different of course for the front ones it being a 4x4

Bed mounting kits?

Should I worry about cracks in the welds of the cab inside the door openings?

And lastly, anyone have an idea of value? It has only minor sheet metal problems, completely rebuilt 292 with 312 heads, dual exhaust, very clean interior with original radio. Original driveline, which has no noticeable slop or noises.

For parts, I always check the online store here first. It helps support this site. :)

Repro companies like Dennis Carpenter do carry the replacement parts to rebuild the box. There's also a place called John's F-Fun Hundreds that sells boxes already rebuilt. Kinda pricey though, somewhere around $600.

Obsolete Ford Parts has F-250 4x4 front drums, but the're around $112.00 a piece. They also carry '57-'60 styleside stainless steel bed bolt kits.
The wooden spacer blocks are not being re-produced by anyone. You'll have to make your own if they need replacing. I have all the dimensions for them if needed. :)

As far as the cracks are concerned, it's hard to say without seeing them. Are they small? large? spreading? I would definately keep an eye on them, and have them fixed if they are large or spreading. :)

Value is another tough one. There are a lot of factors like condition, location, and demand, that effect the value. There's book value, then there's what someone who wants it is willing to pay! :)
I purchased my '59 F-250 4x4 with under 20,000 original miles for $2,500 back in 1999. I took it to my local body shop to have it appraised for insurance purposes, and it came in at $5,000.00. I've also been offered $5,000 for it. I believe the book value is only around $2,200 - $2,400 for "good" condition.

Hey, thanks Kenny! When I first got into attempting to restore my first 'Moby', there was no Internet! Lot's better now!

As to value, I went to the NADA Collector site, and got an average condition value for the 59 4x4 of $7,300!!:rolleyes: , but the one I'm looking at should be reduced, I think, from that price, if that $ amount can even be believed. What do you think?

I hear you on the internet thing! I worked on my first '59 back in the late '70's, early 80's. Luckily, some of the Ford dealers still had a few dusty parts laying around. :)

Thanks for the NADA collectors info! The book value I had came from an outdated CPI (cars of particular interest) book I got from a body shop. It didn't even take 4x4 into consideration.

Looks like we're the only 59 3/4 4x4 guys! I checked out your gallery pics - sweet. Wish I had your steering wheel and shift knobs - mine show some wear, but at least the wheel is intact.

I am still contemplating my offer for the truck - will probably decide by Friday.

One question - how much play (slop) does your truck's steering have? I am unsure as to whether I will have to rebuild the gear.

Joe "69crewcab" has a '59 F-250 4x4. There are a couple others who don't come around too often as well. I think there's also one in the "old" pictorial (link at the bottom right).

I can try to measure the play in my wheel for you tomorrow, (pouring rain right now) but there's very little, if any. My truck has only 19,000 + original miles on it. :)

You said your current '59 was a heartbeat away from the ultimate end? Are you trying to sell it, or is it having some troubles?

:p Kenny, when I say my old '59 is near the end, I mean it's ready to fall off the bent and twisted frame! That truck has one heck of a history, which I will put together some other time in some other way, but the only worthwhile pieces are the hood (which would need some repair), the chrome grill, and maybe the cab, if one was interested in doing lots of work! I've been associated with it for about 26 or 27 years, and love it dearly:-X24

Anyway, hopefully some of the others will come by sometime. Again, thanks for the info - and I would like the dimensions for the wood bed blocks.

I do have a collection of parts, some undented, undrilled doors, some original glass, dash knobs, etc, etc. I will be bringing another old 60 F100 over here sometime this year, and will inventory and post what I have. :9
