Auto to Manual Tranny Starter Swap I6
 

Need a starter for my '66 F250 I6 standard tranny. Like to fix it today. Big box parts stores only stock the auto version. Can I swap out the guts? Is it just the nose cone thats differant?

Just curious why I didn't get a reply. Tough question? Or just not interesting?

Took me about 30 seconds to find this. Says it is for Manual Transmission. 1966 Ford F250 300 I-6 (same as 240 so either way)

Likely already replaced the item but for future references, I have found NAPA usually carry, or can obtain the replacement part w/in 24 hours. Same with the local auto parts store but not sure about the quality??

E1TZ-11002-A (replaced C5TZ-11002-A - D4TZ-11002-D - D7TZ-11002-A) .. M/T Starter (Motorcraft SA-712-B).

1965/74 F100/350 240/300 // 1965/67 E100 240 / 1965/71 Galaxie/LTD 240 / 1969/74 E100/300 240/300 / 1975/89 F100/350 & E100/350 300 / 1981/89 Bronco 300.

240 cancelled at the end of the 1974 model run.

So, Sunday afternoon the only available Starter was for an Automatic. I ordered one, and waited 24 hours. My question is still unanswered. What is the differance between an automatic starter and a manual one? Back in the day, (70's), I was able to adapt GM (AC DELCO) starters from one car to another, simply by swaping out the nose cone. Hypothectically this would be nice info to have if you were stranded along side of the road, and needed a working starter. Never worked on Fords much, until I grew up.

I assume you now have the A/T starter and if you compare it to the M/T starter, you should be able to eyeball the drive end housing to see the difference.

After reading thru the parts catalog starter parts list, this is the only part that is different.

Answered my question. Thanks! I knew someone had the answer. I just wasn't asking right. Useful information as I have 2 '66 F250's, and 1 '65 F100 in the family. Most NAPA's are closed on Sunday here in rural upstate NY. DIY weekend warrior stores (Advanced & Autozone) only stock the A/T version. You have to wait a day to get one for a manual. That's what I ended up doing. Turned my old one in for core, as it wasn't OEM anyway.
