Popping from carb after cam swap

So I put a new cam valve springs and double roller timing chain in my truck ( braket master II 544/544 lift 292/292 duration 108 lobe separation ) in my truck I can't get it to run well at all now it keeps poping out of the carb and shakes like it's missing any ideas timing is set to 10 btdc

Either you flattened a lobe or you put the cam in incorrectly. Did you line up the timing marks when you swapped cams?

Yes Iined up the marks and I had some one double check just to make sure

What's the likely hood of bent push rods. Is that more of a chance than wiping a brand new cam

First thing I would check is the wiring order, all it takes is to be one off

bluegoose95401 09-03-2014 11:43 PM

Firing order has been checked 4 times between 3 people there's a preaty bad exhaust leak I forgot to mention aswell all the vacume lines have been checked and vac plugs have been replaced as well as the carb base gasket

Any chance you put the distributer back in 180* out???

How is the compression?

Rule of thumb, check the compression. I did some work on an engine and had to go pick up a load about 45,ooo lbs. As I came to hills without a load it would start to miss. So I thought better see if a local shop could pin point my problem quickly. After spending 4 hrs shop time it got worse. Limped home and pulled the heads. Several mechanics said the guides were worn too far to use. Instead I grabbed some other heads I had knurled the guides a little and ground the valves. That was 10 years ago and still runs great. Just disturbing the valves a little could have burnt one or several. Also the valves may not be seating correctly. Easy enough to just check compression. My engine coughed through the intake just a little at first then continued to get worse. Thanks

No that was also checked

pull a valve cover, rotate the engine so the cam is on it's base circle for each valve, and check to make sure all rockers are tight.

did you use zinc additive in the oil, and cam break-in paste supplied with your cam?

Did you test drive the vehicle and if so, how does it pull?

I used a hi zinc oil I did not use an additive I dint test drive it I can't even tap the peddle with out it popping

Pull the valve covers off and rotate the engine over and watch each valve to see if they are moving. I would measure the movement of each valve to see if they are all the same. If you find one that not opening as much as the others then you may have found your problem

What was your cam break in procedure? A 108 centreline is pretty tight for a truck motor unless it's for competition.

I would suspect you wiped a lobe or 2 off of the cam during break in. It happens a lot..

Rocker arms too tight? keeping a intake valve open, 292 is a good bit of overlap. did you use new lifters? lots of things to double check, gotta pull the valve covers, do a compression test find out which one it is, or you can pull a plug wire off one at a time and see when the popping stops, that will be the one.

I will be pulling valve covers today to watch valve movement. Brake in was 20 mins at 2k just like the instructions said if the lobes got wiped what's the next step do I have to buy a new set or is that usually covered by warranty ?

new lifters were used as for rockers being to tight it's a non adjustable valve train I dint switch to the adjustable
