What is this or name that part

Working on removing excess stuff from my truck, its been modified over its life and has lots of unused extras just left in place.

One was this hose with a spark plug shoved into the end of it

https://cimg5.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.for...1925dc779d.jpg

When looking at it, it broke off at the other end...

https://cimg0.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.for...5abc5136ed.jpg

Bad photo but there is metal inside that end which came from...

https://cimg1.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.for...329e433c72.jpg

Now the question is, what is that? Its located at the rear of the engine, 460, and can be seen in this photo for reference

https://cimg2.ibsrv.net/gimg/www.for...258741962e.jpg

I assume this isn't a mission critical part since it was so lovingly capped with a spark plug. Part of the factory ac? Has metal tubing come into and out the bottom of that piece, and the hose came out the top and went, somewhere...

The 460 isn't original, was put in who knows when since 1973, into my F250

i believe that is a one way valve for the smog pump that pumps air into the combustion chambers to reduce emissions. There should be a steel line that goes to the back of both heads and that valve is attached to it

Your bottom photo is the PCV. Positive crankcase ventilation. It's there to evacuate the fumes out of the crankcase. You don't want to plug it off or remove it.

I think he put the bottom pic to show where the piece in question goes. Look just past the PCV and you can see the can that the hose broke off from. ;)

I was going to say emissions as well. I take all that crap off of my trucks. :P

Yeah right behind the pcv in the bottom photo you can see the part in question that broke. If is is part of the smog pump can you just remove all that and cap it off? Is it going to hurt anything having that piece exposed like that? Dirt and such getting into it, etc?

Emissions related. This is a 302, but you get the idea.

It's called a anti backfire valve if I remember correctly and was connected to the smog pump.

Thanks for the replies guys! After having a point of reference I found it and lots of info, and is indeed all smog related. My truck has had all that ripped off it so going to remove it and plug the holes in the heads.

Even found a post made by NumberDummy given the part number for the plug. https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/8...block-off.html

Trying to dig around and find an answer to my next question but nothing yet, is it going to hurt anything driving with that open like that? I assume not since that was where emissions were pushed back out of the engine?

Plug the heads and scrap the smog pump,on some 460's they had 2 smog pumps and you should be good.If you really want to wake that motor up change the timing gears to an early70's timing gear set for a 429-460. I believe the where run straight up and yours has 4-7 degrees retard already built into it, unless it has already been changed.

We're that pipe mounts to the back of the head, you would need a block off plate, bolts hold them on, I usually unbolt the pipe from the back of both heads, and cut the pipe off, mig or braze the pipe shut and remount the flange part of the tube back to the head, maybe someone made a block off kit like some fuel pumps but I doubt it. You will have to reuse the mounting part so be careful when you RIP it out.
