4V Intake Manifold
My 64 292 is bone stock as far as I know.
It has the pcv valve in the proper location with the proper hoses and tubes attached to it. Im planning on a set of Speedway headers and a 4V with a 500cfm carb. If I use a oem 4V intake manifold from an earlier year will I lose the pcv valve? Im guessing that earlier manifolds do not have the fitting for the valve. Im not willing to give up the pcv valve or ant of the stock hardware so if the earlier manifold does not have the fitting for the valve, Im keeping the 2V. |
How is your PCV routed now? There are plugs in most of 4 barrel intakes I've seen that you could route your PCV to. The part that is harder to come by is the valley pan connection.
Some Y Blockers add a spacer (drilled and tapped) under the Carb with the PCV connection pointed towards the back of the engine. Very similar to how the 70ish EGR valves were installed back in the day. |
I got lucky when I bought my 64.
Everything is exactly as it was when it left the assembly line. I have the pvc valve screwed into the 2V manifold just forward of the carb, a rubber hose connects it to the hardline, a second rubber hose connects the hardline to the fitting at the rear of the valley pan. On the 50s era 4V manifolds I do not see the hole for the pcv valve in the manifold. I suppose that I could drill and tap the hole myself, Im guessing that it just goes into the plenum. Or, I could run the pcv valve into a fitting on the carb spacer. I like the oem setup, its clean, uncluttered, and looks like it belongs there. Another question: I see finned valley pans for sale, but not with the oil fill or fitting for the pcv. How do you fill the crankcase? |
You'd have to Have a Valve cover that would allow you to pour oil into engines with the aluminum valley pans. That's also where the air intake would be for the PCV. Or no PCV and just the slobber tube (aka Draft Tube) on the Driver's side of the engine. Later blocks didn't even have this ability because they didn't machine the blocks for it.
If you go 4 Barrel many of them have a port on the Carb for PCV. |
I'm not sure about the pcv, I have a couple 4v intakes (not for sale). If you post a picture I can compare.
I think Mummert makes an aluminum pan with the fill tube and pcv/road draft provision. I don't think it's finned, though. |

This one sold on eBay for $250.00 but no PCV in the back??? http://www.ford-y-block.com/valleycovers.htm Mumment has one WITH PCV. |
Is there a pcv valve in the system? If not, what keeps raw vacuum from sucking oil out of the crank case?
|
The older engines had a road draft tube on the drivers side.

I'm right in the tail end of doing this mod on my 64 F250. I mounted an Autolite 4100 on top of an old 60's vintage small block Ford aluminum spacer plate that has the vacuum port out the back on a 57 Thunderbird ECZ-9425-B intake. I'm reusing the stock 64 pcv valve and 3/8ths heater hose to hook in the valve. The hose will fit over the threaded portion of the pcv valve and fits to the spacer via the hose. I also rotated the valley pan fitting away from the distro for room. The unthreaded part of the pcv valve will also be fitted with the heater hose and go to the valley pan fitting.
Right now, I'm trying to figure out how to hook up the hot choke tubing to the intake manifold. |
|
Mikey, It may be easier to find an electric choke for the 4100. One wire hook up and your ready to go.
|
Oh, I agree but like the challenge of hooking up the old system. If it won't work, I have the manual components I can swap off the original two barrel.
|
|
Got it all to work. I hooked up the manual choke and had to swap the parts from the 2V. I even had to swap the throttle shaft to get it all to line up.
