Will we ever get an Ecoboost?
 

Does anyone think we will ever see an Ecoboost super duty? I would love to see ford produce them and would likely trade my f-150 for one. But my personal opinion is that they will never make one due to cutting into the higher price and profit powerstroke sales. What is everyone else's opinion?

Getting an Ecoboost in a superduty is like asking if ford is going to put a diesel in the F-150. I may have bought an F-150 if it had the diesel option.

A single turbo 5.0l would work well.

I think they are waiting on the turbo 5.0 because turbos are evolving so fast right now.
They don't need to produce it either. No need to get too far ahead of the regs.

Imagine a 5 stage twin turbo where the first stage will give you full boost as soon as you touch the pedal.

Or how about a SuperBoost? Super charged 6.2L!

I've read in the latest edition of Truck Trend that a boosted 5.0L may / will be coming for the next generation Raptor to replace the 6.2L.

I don't see why it wouldn't work in a superduty.

I'd be surprised if Ford does a 5.0 EcoBoost for the Raptor. Even a slightly increased 3.5 should hit 0-60 in about 5-5.5 seconds with the weight reduction. Don't get me wrong, I'd love to see it happen, and hope it does happen. It would also make a killer Mustang engine.

I'd personally be game to try a EB SD, 500+ ft pounds would be nice.

I would be surprised if any type of turbocharged gasoline engine in a Super Duty. I don't think the technology is mature enough to place the Ecoboost into commercial use. If one could tow a large load, full time, for 250,000 trouble free miles then maybe.

I don't know bro, I'm not convinced that many modern small diesels are working hard for 250,000 trouble free miles.

What will the sales gimmick of a turbo 5.0 be?

I know for 4 and 6 cylinders they say "power of a v6 gas mileage of a 4, or power of a v8 mileage of a v6".

"Torque of a diesel, mileage of a turbo V8!" ? lol

And I'm not sure mentioning ECO and turbo V8 in the same sentence is possible. I'm a little doubtful there is much they can do with a 7000+ lb truck and gas motor to get good MPG and still keep the power up to tow and haul heavy loads. I'd be more welcoming of a smaller diesel, maybe a 4.5 or 5 liter heavy duty engine with a little less towing capacity and a good bit more mpg. I only need to personally tow about 11,000 not 17,000. Don't get me wrong a turbo 5.0 gas motor would be awesome but I cannot see them putting it in a superduty. I'd be less surprised to see the 3.5 make its way into them.

I still think we are at the point that there is not a whole lot more they can do to keep putting out more powerful engines and still try to raise fuel economy, except shaving a lot of weight. People are power hungry but at the same time want to get 30mpg.

Before Ford decided on the 2.7l v6 ecoboost, they actually wanted to put the 2.3l 4cyl ecoboost in the F150, but they couldn't quite get the drivability they wanted. Otherwise, we would have had a 4 cyl F150.

Keep that in mind when you think about the next generation Superduty. With Ford's aggressive engine downsizing and stricter emissions/mpg standards just starting to hit the trucks over 8500lbs gvwr, I honestly wouldn't be surprised to see a V6 ecoboost in a Superduty. Especially now that they're going to lighten the truck up a bit with aluminum.

Call me crazy but I do not think that a 3.5 Ecoboost in a superduty would be a bad idea. I would think it would still get upper teens in highway mpg dept. with a 3.73 rear end and still tow quite well.

I could see Ford doing the 3.5 as an option in the F250, but not the F350.

Probably not the DRW trucks, but they put the 5.4l in the SRW F350 and that was no where near as powerful as the ecoboost.

Personally, I'm really curious to see what engine replaces the 6.8L in the chassis cabs (and F650). The 6.2l is the likely candidate, but right now it's a little down on torque for those applications. A slightly larger displacement version would probably be ideal.
