Straight 6 Exhaust
Just wondering what y'all recommend for a good sounding muffler/exhaust for a 89 F150 with the I6. I'm wanting a mean/agressive sound. I know it won't sound like a V8 but I'd like to try... Also don't want it sounding like a rice burner
Thanks |

Thanks Let's face it; these inline 6 bangers don't sound good without split headers, true duals that aren't too big, maybe two inches max and Smitty-type mufflers. Flowmaster 40 series might be okay, but then again, you might not like the sound. Anything ran as a single will sound like a John Deere. Just my $0.02 USD worth. Ray |
If you don't want it to sounds bad, don't touch the exhaust. You can't get a mean or aggressive tone from an I6.

...just not the Ford 300 I6. :-X04 Not without a lot of work. |
I knew something like that was coming....

embrace the sound of thy tractor.

I listened to the clip and I don 't hear anything mean or aggressive.. sounds like the same lame I6 moan to me.

I would recommend one of our 50 Series Delta Flow mufflers for your application. The 50 Series Delta Flow muffler will produce a mellow, low tone at idle and under normal driving conditions, but sound mean at WOT. This muffler will calm down the rasp that most people associate with the tone of a 6 cylinder. Let me know if you have any questions.

I like my aerochamber.

To be honest, I've never heard of a mean sound from an I6. I used to have a truck with a I6, but I could never make it sound that great. When I had it I just installed a full exhaust to make it really quiet.

The only way to get a decent tone out of a I6 is to split the exhaust. That means a set of headers (I6 split headers) that gives two exhaust paths. The exhaust pipe needs to be around 2 inches for each path (150 CI per pipe) and the muffler restriction will dictate the loudness. Flowmaster 40's or 50's will work, along with Smitty type mufflers.
Even with a split exhaust, it will never sound mean. Refined, yes but not mean. Single exhaust, I don't care who's muffler you use, still sounds like a tractor. Just my $0.02 USD. YMMV. Ray |
