Which diesel engine for a mid 90s F250?
I recently sold my 94 F250 with the 460 cubic inch gas engine. I'm looking to replace it with an affordable diesel powered F250. I've found a few from the mid 90s that have the International 7.3 diesel. Just wondering how this engine compares to the 7.3 Powerstroke I had in my 2000 Excursion? That was a great motor.
What should I be concerned about regarding the IDI(?) diesel and want are the pros/cons? |
I missed the sub-forum on these engines. Reading through it now. If mods want to delete this thread - go ahead. I could not find a way to delete it myself.

there were 3 7.3's used in the 90's
7.3 IDI naturally aspirated.( non turbo) used until 94 7.3 turbo IDI used 93 to 94.5 7.3 Powerstroke. used after 94.5 the 7.3 IDI is a workhores and will run damn near forever with proper maintenance. but they are slow. the turbo IDI is a little better, and the powerstroke is really good. a properly tuned turbo IDI will run just as good as a stock powerstroke i have a 88 7.3 with a banks turbo on it with 494,000 miles on it that will still outrun a lot of cars on the road. |
Like Tom said, with PROPER maintenance the IDI will go a long, long time, just not very fast. but if neglected(and many were) you will have a ticking time bomb
The 94.5-97 power stokes are almost Identical to your 2000 Engine. A little smaller injectors, NON intercooled and they are about 25hp less than the excursion but the trucks are MUCH lighter than the SuperDutys |
