Transmission slipped out of gear while driving.

1996 F250 7.3L Turbo Automatic

I was driving home this evening and after stopping at a Stop sign. I pulled out on the road and started driving then all of a sudden I had not transmission. No gear would work. I coasted into a driveway and tried reverse. NOTHING happened. I put it in Park and it started grinding loudly and then seemed to go in. There was a different smell coming from under the truck but couldn't see anything wrong. I turned the truck off and then back on no change. I noticed that the Park position would go past the P indicator easily. I don't think it actually was going into park. I was able to put it into the Neutral position push the truck with it running, at least we think. I was able to push it to a parking lot so it seems to be either in nuetral or not connected.

Never had ANY kind of issue with the transmission,

What happened????? Any ideas????

Thanks!!!

Is it a 4 wheel drive?

Yes it is a 4x4 (currently no shaft on drivers side so can't lock in the front).

Well I got to the truck this morning an looked it over. I can change the gears and the transmission shifts fine. The back axle gears seem to have blown apart.

Yep, that was going to be my guess, when you put it in park the driveshaft was still spinning, causing the grinding noise. Now pull the rear shaft and put the front back in. that should buy ya some time.

Thanks for your help!!! I'll have it apart (hopefully later today) and rebuilt. I'll keep ya posted.

Carzy, I figured thos gears would be tougher then that. At least while under significant stress
