mustang II shocks
 
hello everyone,what length you guys recommend of the shocks,factory 32118 or longer?I think I have heidts ifs.cheers

I have the same Heits set up on my 49 F1 the shocks do not want to go in to the bottom mount and then they are about 1/2" to short to get the nut started. I spent hours going over the Monroe mounting & length sheet

The only shock that has close to the same mounts is # 5815 The top mount( S-4) is the same the lower mount is 3/16" shorter (LS19) ( 32118 use LS20)
on the 5815 comp is 8.75" ext is 13.25" travel is 4.50"
on the 32118 comp is 8.375" ext is 11.00" travel is 2.625"

Easy solution is NOT to buy cheap crap Monroes! Shocks are the most important part of the suspension and valving should be matched to the spring rate and vehicle axle weight. Monroes and the other mass market shocks all use the same junk internals no matter what the application.

How far along are you do you have the brake lines done yet? If you do can you tell me what hoses you used & maybe post some pics. I have been trying for weeks to get this done

I replaced the no-name shocks on my '51 (with a helix IFS kit... heidts is much better) with a set of monroe 32118 shocks (bought them from Summit) and they fit and work great.

I've done this several times before, but once again the shock manufacturers I'd recommend that offer shocks valved for the application (all have customer support experts that are glad to help with selection, they want their customers to be happy with their shocks and to have them work properly. Just be sure you are talking to the manufacturer, not just a distributor or rebuilder.) All (except Bilstein) offer non adjustable, single adjustable and double adjustable models. I'd suggest using non adjustable for low speed around town driving, single adjustable if you like performance driving, tailored feel, occasional corner carving, and double adjustable for maximum performance with an updated front and rear suspension, and occasional drag racing.
In no particular order my recommendation would be: Koni, Bilstein, Penske, Afco, QA1, KYB. There are a couple others I may have skipped. In shopping for adjustable shocks be sure the adjustment(s) affects only the rebound (most single adjustable) or rebound and compression (double adjustable) separately.
There are a couple manufacturers (aimed primarily at the tuner/poser/stance crowd) where the single adjuster supposedly adjusts the rebound and compression simultaneously. NEVER A GOOD IDEA, a useless marketing "feature"! Yes a quality shock is more expensive than a high volume manufactured heavily advertised brand, but you are paying for quality parts and high precision manufacturing that fit and work, and usually carry a lifetime guarantee. The difference is easily appreciated and immediately apparent.
