6.0 Oil Pan Removal
I've done some searches around the net and have some information about R&R the oil pan on my 2006 F350 4x4 with a 6.0 engine. I know you have to lift the motor up until the turbo about touches the cowl. Fan stator must be loosened and clip for transmission lines taken off among other things. Just for background info, I've been doing all my own automotive work for over 30 years including engine, transmission, rearend work, etc. And so far I've handled all the repairs on my 6.0 myself (unison ring replacement and turbo cleanup, hpop system leak repair, and more). So I'm not intimidated to tackle this job. I know there are two oil pan gaskets and the pick up tube has to be unbolted.
Are there any other things to watch out for or specialty tools needed to do the oil pan gasket with the engine in the truck? Thanks in advance for the help. This is a great forum and it's helped me on more than a few repairs on my 6.0. |
not really. I pulled the turbo when I had my 05 apart. Basic tools and you should be fine. I just the fan shroud, pulled the mount bolts and it came right up.

Just keep in mind that the upper pan is more than just the pan it is the bottom half of the main bearing assembly. Best not to remove it if you don't have too.

X2 the bed plate is a completely different animal than just the oil pan

If you have to do the bed plate it best to pull the engine and do it
right. In other words upside down. Also you will most likely at that point also have to replace both of the crank seals and to do that your going to need the seal tools for each end. Sean https://www.ford-trucks.com/forums/p...ctureid=149188 |
Ok, I was under the impression that there was a piece of aluminum sandwiched between the oil pan and the bedplate. I thought there was a gasket on each side of this aluminum piece. Am I wrong on this? I know not to mess with the bedplate unless I pull the engine.
Edit I just found this picture. Here's what I'm talking about. It's called the upper oil pan in the photo. http://www.powerstroke.org/forum/att...ing-oilpan.jpg |

Yes there is the bed plate, upper oil pan (2 oring gaskets, one on each side and the lower pan. No special tools needed for the job. Pretty simple deal. Pay attention to witch bolts go where on the pan. There are two different length bolts. Other than that pretty straight fwd job.

I have mine apart on the bench right now, if you need a pic or anything, let me know.

Thanks for the help and info everyone. I changed the upper and lower oil pan gaskets out yesterday. It was pretty straight forward. The biggest pain in the a$$ turned out being the stud on the right side of the upper oil pan that the transmission lines and wire harness hook on to. What a pain that was trying to get the harness and cooling lines back on when you can't reach in there at all.
