Where to start (another 1st timer)
 
Finally have the chance to try to get my 52 F-1 on the road. Its been sitting for a long time. It's stock with a V-8 flathead 3 on the tree. Really enjoy reading the forum and getting ideas (mostly day dreaming) on what to do with my truck. My first project will be getting it out of its cocoon. I hope to do this soon. Just need to get a few free days. I have a few old pics i'll try to post later and hopefully get some new pics soon.

Ben I always read your post and I have seen your truck a few times. SWEET TRUCK! Would like to pick your brain one day to get ideas on what you have done and what you would do different.

Welcome PRG!

If it is at all possible, consider getting the truck functional before launching any upgrades. Too often, the truck becomes piles of good intentions without any miles of enjoyment (and education) for the owner. New brakes, fuel lines, fluids change, a carb rebuild, and tires often go a long way to becoming road worthy. If this isn't possible, consider incremental steps that, again, get you on the road.

There are too few hours and too few dollars in most of our truck budgets - you want to enjoy your beauty sooner than later - and give you a chance to listen to the truck.

Enjoy the ride.

For a first-timer the incremental process is the way to go. Fix a little, drive a little...this will keep you in the game. Too many folks start big and never finish because they lose the vision of driving a pristine restored truck while being mired in the day-to-day grind of building it. The dream becomes a nightmare and soon the truck, well really the pile of parts, is another line item on CraigsList. Good luck on your truck!

I totally endorse the idea of getting it driving first, then as you log miles with your elbow on the window sill you can figure out firsthand just what you want and what the truck needs. But you will have fun driving it as you decide on your next mood.

I got the truck in San Antonio and had the engine purring like a kitten even with cracked manifolds back in the late 90's. Then moved to Austin because of work and haven't had the time nor money to work on it. It's sitting @ my Dad's ranch covered and sorry to say neglected. I plan on moving it back to my Dad's house (since I can find people to work on it cheaper in SA) and getting it started and hopefully on the road.

Ben I saw your truck (I think it was yours) @ E/R automotive in CP and on the corner of Main & 10th. I was on my way to work both days and didn't get a chance to stop and get a really good look at it.

I agree whole heartedly with the fix and enjoy method for the first timer (like me). It's exactly what I did and am still doing LOL. I've been working on mine for around 12 years now and have enjoyed driving it most of that time. You have the perfect truck for this as you already know it runs, or did awhile back, just make it safe to drive and do the rest at your own speed. One thing I can absolutely guarantee, and that is you are really going to enjoy this.

Welcome Again! Your truck looks pretty good - not a lot of obvious rust. Your interior looks a lot better than our's did. We cleaned our's up & sprayed the interior with bedliner. Does it run?

It did run back in 2000... I need to massage it back into shape again. I really would like to put something more modern into it engine wise. I want to drive it but need A/C and all that good stuff to make it comfortable.

All it took was pretty much the basics.. points, plugs, distributor cap, clean the gas tank, and a new fuel pump... THEN a turn of the key and lucky me!! IT'S ALIVE!! ALIVE I SAID!! lol Still need a little more before I can be running up and down 183 Ben but hopefully soon... It was really nice to hear it run and run strong (let it run for about 1hr and no over heating issues). Big relief to know the flatty is still going strong.
