52 running engine

I have the chance to buy a running 52 engine out of an F-? (big flatbed) and wondered what it might be worth? Just a ball park idea.
Seems strange but I see very little used parts listed for sale and no engines.
Also would be getting the floor shift transmission.
Thanks,
TractormanBill

Is it the Big V8 (337), a 239 V8, or a big 6 (254)?

1952 engine

I'm sorry I must have been asleep, it is a V-8 but I don't know which size but it is in a 1 ton or larger truck.

Personally I wouldn't go more than $250 without checking compression, cooling system quality (clean or dirty?), oil pressure, oil condition, etc. "Running" doesn't take much in terms of compression. A 239 in one of the large trucks gets a real workout, could be pretty worn but a good builder. You are likely buying a core, in other words, unless the owner can show work done.

If its the old 239, the dist will be in front of the right head, if its the big 337, the dist will in the back like a Y block.

52 V8 engine

Thanks for all the info and suggestions.
When you get right down to it the block may even have a freeze crack or who knows what.
It is in a complete truck that is very clean sheet metal wise and if I buy it I will probably just salvage it and sell off all the parts.
I have been building 8N Ford tractor engines for 25 years so if it is a good core it should be a piece of cake to rebuild since I have all the special tools for valves, etc. and access to a lot of the engine new parts.

Bill - If you buy it please let me know. I might be interested in the transmission if it fits my 1950 F-2 with 239 V-8. My 4 speed is in need of a major overhaul.

52 F-? truck

Petemcl,
This truck has a 4 speed in it and don't know what size the truck is.
I was just about to go ahead and pass it up since I am 75 and don't know how much I wanted to screw with it.
It has such a pretty body on it I just hate to see it go to the crusher.
If you can use the trans. it just might push me into purchasing it.
Got to transport it over 200 miles but that is better than 2,000.

The F-model number should be stamped in the round badge on the hood

52 large truck

I've tried to blow it up but still cannot read it.
Didn't know if the lugs on the rear wheels would give me a clue but cannot count them, only the front.

You think the 4 speed will be a synchro?

52 old F-?

Hope the trans. isn't shattered but you know what they say about a box of Chocolate.

I think the sychro 4 speed was optional, not standard, in those trucks.

That is a decent looking truck. Someone should do something with it.
