Changing the EPC?

Hey guys,
I have an E4OD in my pickup (as you can see below) and it's been doing some funny things. For one, it tries to die in reverse. It will go to about 500 rpm and often croak unless i give it gas. Recently it began doing that occasionally in drive. It will come to a stop and idle, then the rpm will drop to 500 or lower again and I have to either hold the brake and gas or put it in neutral. I had one fella suggest replacing the MAP (manifold absolute pressure) sensor. The manual says that the symptoms of a bad MAP sensor is "firm shift feel, late shifts at altitude". The electronic pressure control solenoid (EPC) though states that if solenoid 3 (TCC) isnt functioning right, "failed on-engine stalls in drive at idle low speeds with brake applied or manual." That sounds more like the problem. The manual says that the EPC solenoid 3 (TCC) "engages torque converted clutch".
Do you think the torque converter is trying to grab too soon? I would also like to know the rough cost of both of these items, the work involved to replace them, if i can do it myself or if i should have a shop do it. Thanks for your help.

Changing the EPC?

Try the Motorcraft site for price & PN. It's sort of a pain to use, but it's official Ford. I have no idea if it has prices, though.

For the procedure, get a Ford/Helm service CD off eBay for ~$10 delivered to your door. It has plenty of other stuff to make it worth 10x that much. With it, you can decide if you can handle the job.
