ok. but does the coke and aluminum foil get rid of the rust or does it just hide it? Sorry but i have a big problem with iron rust. i dont mind dulled metals, but iron rusts like no other.

Acidity of the Coca cola helps break the chemical bond, and aluminum foil is just coarse enough to get the bulk of the rust without ruining the remaining finish. I wouldn't say it is going to get rid of everything, but for $2, it'll make a crappy looking piece of trim look better. I used to have a chromed bicycle as a teenager, and it cleaned up most of the rust.

i was serious about the wiring. i still have stuff hanging out from under the dash. im afraid to touch anything for fear it will stop running. i think you will persevere and end up with a good truck. the visor tips are available by the way. no need to pay for new ones unless those are trashed. fyi

Oven cleaner? care to elaborate?

Soveriegn_Sails 04-06-2014 06:21 PM

Thanks super tuff. i could always weld some round stock to it too. but can you elaborate on it? I read about using oven cleaner somewhere on the forums, but i forgot what for.

Today i removed the front grill and decided to check out how bad the crack in the front bumper is.

Picture of the crack in the bumper.

It is odd because there is some body damage pushing the fender in. im guessing the truck was hit in the front side at one point.

The aluminum or nonmagnetic stainless plate taken off.

It is really a lot worse than i thought. It is almost pitted through the weld.
and some of the welds have a lot of undercut which leads me to think that this bumper is not very strong

It came off with a slightly strong pull... :-roll

And this is how it looks now!

Nice!!!! It's a shell of a truck indeed. Great platform to make the dream truck of your choice. Ditch EVERYTHING in the truck and start with the frame and suspension and work from there to the body to the motor and then the interior and wiring.....start it up and drive away with your new truck........if only it was as easy as the dreams that are thought of....

Congrats on your project. Enjoy.
