How to Improve Performance and Fuel Economy

2014 F350 6.2 4x4 Crew Cab Short Bed 6.2 4.30 gears. Seem to average around 13 mpg. Is there any way to improve mpg? Looked in the sales brochures and it says there is less HP and TQ for GVWR above 10,001. This truck has an 11,400 GVWR. Has the HP and TQ been reduced for it vs an F250?

The HP and TQ are the same as in the F-250, they're just measured at a different RPM. Look closely at the Peak RPM for each and you'll see the difference.

13 MPG is not that bad really for a truck that heavy or big. The only way to improve your mileage is to get a smaller vehicle as a daily driver or lay off the long, skinny pedal.

As the other guy just said, the numbers were reduced for the 350 or trucks over 10,001# for vehicle technical purposes like insurance, emissions, or registration. Sort of like when they have trucks under 9,900# for registration purposes.

So the HP and TQ are the same, just rated lower at a lower RPM for registration?

powerstroke72 03-07-2014 07:21 AM

They're rated differently at different RPMs because of SAE rating methods per GVWR and for emissions. They have the same power, the same tune, etc.

You need a tuner. I was very disapointed in the performance of my 6.2 in a supercab longbox version. It felt lethargic. I had a superchip in my V10 that also worked with my 6.2 so I plugged her in. Instant performance!! The truck always went good when you were at top rpm but was slow to rev. The tuner changed all that. The truck accelerates effortlessly now. It goes over hill a gear taller now. I have the 4.30 too. I loaded up a tank of premium and tried the 93 octane tune too. More giggles from driving my new F250 "raptor". I did an intake and exhaust prior to the tuner with no noticeable results. Milage has stayed the same at 15mpg Canadian gallons combined driving.

If you put a chip in the truck, I doubt you'll get better MPG's. You might get worse due to happy feet stomping on the pedal!
Best I've got is a 14.5 tank unloaded. That's an average with combined hwy and City. I have the 250 4x4 CC with the 3.73 gears. I have a little over 11k on my truck. You can get better MPG. Check your tire pressures, and watch your acceleration. Also going over 70 causes gas to be sucked out BIG TIME. Try to stay around 65. Cruise control is your best friend.
Just my .2

That's ok. Some of us are old enough to have actually installed a chip.
