Speaker Placement
Looking towards adding some tunes in my 56 F100. I currently have a single speaker cut into the dash and an AM radio from the late 60's / early 70's neither are original '56 pieces. My neighbor gave me a newish JVC head unit I was going to mount in the glove box. I also picked up a pair of 5 1/4" speakers at a local sale. I'm going to keep the existing radio and speaker in the dash but just disconnect them for now.
I was wondering where the best placement for these speakers would be? I'm going to be finishing the interior a little more and adding door panels, I've thought of mounting the speakers behind the panel with a cutout for sound, in the space where the door filler panels are already. Another option was mounting in the kick plates under the dash, and thirdly I've thought about mounting the speakers under the seat but fear I will hardly get any sound that way. Thoughts? |
As far as the speakers go, I vote kick panels. This keeps you from cutting any factory sheetmetal. Just my thoughts.

X2 on the kickpanels. Or in boxes. I have two behind the seat in my 73 and they sound good even with the bench there

I go with the kick panels

I would also recomend that the speakers go in the kick panels .

I tucked a set of bose bookshelf speakers under the seat. The kickpanels are also a good location for a 4"-5" set of speakers. My last '51 had both.

Another vote for kick panels.

I put a pair of 6x9's under the seat in boxes that face forward. They put out plenty of sound. I am making some kickpanels for a set of 6 1/2" speakers also (I am not a fan of cutting holes in doors).
If you are unsure, you can always just run a set of wires from the stereo to a set of speakers and just set them under the seat to see if they would sound OK to you (or move them anywhere temporarily). If you don't like the sound, you haven't drilled or cut anything and can try them elsewhere. |
Another vote for kick panels and I also used rear cab corners.

I saw I think on ebay, where you could buy the kick panels with Kenwood speakers already installed. When I get to this point,I'll be going BB/fords way. Good luck, L8R ZFLASH
