I dropped it and with about 12 gallons in it I disconnected the hoses off my pump for the aux tank and sucked it dry. I ordered a new sending unit and will mod it according to Jim's write up. My orginal sending unit fell apart, the one my nephew got me didn't work so I'm waiting on the new one.

I got the wheel bearings in, put the brake "t" in off my axle as it was better, put my big cover on, drilled out the spring hangers to 3/4 for my spring bolts, and installed the axle. It's all hooked up and done for the most part. I have a question, pics are included with it here.

The solid stud sticking through this hub, between the wheel studs you see, seems to be a brake drum locator. The drum on this side has slots in the stud holes, so the drum will turn without that stud in there. The other side, the drum has round holes, not slotted like the other, and I have no solid locator on that side. The drum can't turn though as the holes are round. I'm guessing that was a replacement drum at one point. You'll see what I mean in the pics. Am I ok like this? Is it the way it is supposed to be? Do I need one for the other side? Just want to make sure.

Another question. Anyone know where I can get a new vss pigtail? I checked riffraff and didn't see one unless I missed it. Searched here and didn't come up with crap. I broke one of the side clips so I should replace it.

Darin I got one from JEGS

427 fordman 01-05-2014 04:25 PM

Thanks Mike. I found it there and got one coming.

The progress looks good Darin.

Rockauto has the VSS pigtail too for future reference. I think they might call it an ABS sensor or something though.

I didn't understand about the studs your talking about. On both my sides I have a stud that sticks out that the wheels line up to with a hole in the wheels.

Both of my duallys have a roll pin where the "locater" is in the first pic, that sticks out threw both wheels, and the inner wheel has a nob like that locater that fits into the hole in the drum that you can see in pic #3. The nob on the wheel is 1/4 turn off of where the roll pin will go threw the wheel. The roll pin "times" the wheels so the hand holes in the wheels aline. As long as the wheels fit tight/flat to the drums you will be fine. The drum with the slots where the studs fit threw must have been run loose as mine have just the round holes like your other one.

That style locator for the drum may be something just on the first gen axles.

Thanks guys. Tom, I never thought about that drum getting egged out, but I guess it could have. The wheels fit tight to the drums and fit good on the wheel studs so I should be ok then.

I'm not sure if this was said or if I missed it somewhere Darin, are you going with a D60?

The roll pin is to line up the valve stems so you can get to the inside one. That is the ONLY reason it is there.

I cut mine off and have Zero issues(I was not going to drill a hole in my Alcoa wheels and spacers)

Thanks for that info Brad.

Todd, I'm using my 50. Maybe someday I'll get a 60 under there, but my 50 is in good shape and will do me fine for now.

Here's one shot of the axle in the truck. I'm getting two tires, and a few odds n ends this week to finish it up. Couple more weekends and the dually conversion will be done. Spent a few hours shoveling out the shop again. Man, I can make a mess.

Holy leaf springs........ I think I'll keep my stock springs and run air bags. That has to ride like hell, especially when empty. LOL

Diesel_Brad 01-06-2014 03:11 PM

WOW that is a stack of springs. What is that 10 plus the overload?
