steering box grease?

Hey guys I was cleaning and inspecting the steering box,I got the steering wheel off and took the column off and noticed a felt pad at the bottom of column.what is the purpose of this and what kind of grease should I put in? How do I know if needs new seals? Also the gears move freely.

On the earlier Fords the steering boxes used 90W gear oil. If that runs out of your seals you need new seals.

Ok thanks that's what I thought would Lucas gear oil work

Yes that would be fine but any 90W Hypoid lube will work . Some use John Deere Corn Head Grease .
