Just got a "new" '97' f350 w/460

I am looking to keep a great truck that I just picked up the other day great. After having a 06 ranger for about 7.5 years I just traded it for a perfect (I can not stress perfect enough) f350 cc 4x4 460. I know that I will lose some gas milage. And it will ride a little rougher… But it was one of those once in a lifetime things. Plus the Wife said I could! Is there anything I need to watch out for with this engine? So far all I can tell about it is that it has grande power. And that if I press really hard on the skinny pedal I grin alot.

Biggest issue with 1990-97 460s is the engine oil cooler. There is a thread in this forum regarding these. Other than that they are real tough engines.

There are 2 different control systems in 1997, actually 3. 49 state (most) are still EEC-IV bank fired speed density (SD/BF) as they are over 8500 GVW. California and allegedly Massachusetts sold trucks up to 14000 GVW have a sequential mass air flow EEC-V system SEFI/MAF, CA trucks over 14000 use an EEC-V system set up like the 49 state, SD/BF. The easiest way to tell if you have an EEC-V is look for the OBD-II test connector (called a port) under the passenger side of the dash, if you have the port to determine if you have SD or MAF, look at the air intake system, if there are 2 hoses from the air cleaner it is SD, if there is an aluminum body with an electrical connector and one large hose to a wye, then a pair you have an MAF system.

Had mine new since day one. Never had engine trouble. E40d went at 110k miles. Still pull 10000lbs all the time. Still freaks me out to see the tach go to 4750 but has not blown at147k miles
