what is the line for that's dripping fuel?
 

This morning when I started the truck I got a leak of fuel coming out of this line. I drove to where I was going and parked the truck. While the truck is off I get no leak. Drove it back home and it was leaking again.
It seems to be some kind of breather tube. Do I just need to replace the hose with diesel rated fuel line and be done with it or do I have bigger problems? By the way, the hose is terribly rotted.

I'm under the passenger tire and that shiny new tube is the EBPT for reference.

That tube is the fuel bowl drain valve tube, it connects to the fuel bowl at the drain valve. Just get some new O-rings from Bob at diesel o-rings and change them out. As far as the rubber hose just take it off and file it in file 13.

some people add the hose so when you open the drain lever to drain any fuel you can catch it in a jug/bucket and not make a mess on your drive way.

If it's just the back of the fuel bowl valve leaking, you simply need two Viton #202 o-rings. Non-viton will work for a temporary fix (a few weeks maybe), but you need Viton for the long haul.

I really appreciate the how to.

I have a problem now though. I started the truck this morning with no problem. But it died a minute later and now wont start. Fuel gauge still reads plenty of fuel.
Could the o-rings cause a no start problem? Is there something else I should be looking at, or just wait for the o-rings to show up and replace?

Did you just get the o-rings for the drain valve? I would have suggested getting the whole fuel bowl overhaul kit. If the drain o-rings are leaking then all of your o-rings are bad after more than ten years and need to be changed out. It is very easy to change out all of the o-rings. As for your 'no start', if your leak is heavy enough to where the bowl drained out and had air in it. the truck would have started fine with fuel in the lines, but when that was used up air is now there for a little bit. Over haul the fuel bowl and stop all leaks and it should be fine.

What year is your truck? When you are attempting to crank it, does the tach move, are you getting a wait to start light? (if it is older than 2002, this is important)

as Les said you could have air in the system or it could be other things. like Jason is asking, tell us more about the truck.
i replaced just the drain valve rings 3 yrs. ago and all has been good. my fuel bowl is still stock.

Sorry I was in a rush this AM and now I'm in my phone.
The truck is a late 99 and all seems normal other then just cranking. The wts light comes on a well as the tach.
I will check in the fuel bowl when I get home and prime the system.
Also will order the overhaul kit.

I pulled the fuel bowl cover off when I got home and it had no fuel in the bowl. I turned the key to on the position 4 or 5 times and checked the bowl. It then had fuel in it. I then cycled the key 2 more times for good measure since I had taken the cover off. Still no start. I cranked it 3 times for 4 seconds or so each time with no luck.
I did not mess with the yellow plastic switch on the back of the fuel bowl as I do not when I should or shouldnt touch it.

Should I have done something different?

Sounds like your leak is not allowing enough pressure to build to start the engine. Did it wet the ground with fuel while you tried to start it? A fuel pressure gauge would be helpful.

There are other possibilities too.

The ground was soaked but I think it was because of taking the FB cover off.
I forgot to mention that while cycling the key for fuel pressure. The noise of the moving fuel sounded like a fart under water. It never really sounded solid. ?? While I didnt see any fuel leaking from anywhere maybe air is escaping from somewhere? I'm pretty clueless here.

Since my package from diesel o rings wont get to me until I get home wedn night. Can anyone tell me what the 3rd o ring is supposed to be? The 2 main ones are #202. Any idea if my local auto parts will stock them?

Also does it sound like I'm on the right path so far with my last couple of posts? Still hopeful that the new o-rings will solve my problem?
