Plant oil powered diesel
Interesting reading. If this takes off, it will change a LOT in the diesel world. I'm already running my 2 diesels on waste vegi oil and I get it for free. Thats going to change too.

It already has -- did years ago, in fact. It's been very difficult in NM to get free vegetable oil for some time.

They only have one filling station up, I would call that "taking off".

That seems like a pretty ambitious business model. Personally, I question the viability of it. As a commodity yellow grease is trading at the equivalent of over $2/gal. They will have to collect it, treat it, store it, and dispense it. Maybe their planning to make their money on the conversion set ups?
I think Flainn was alluding to the fact that SVO as a fuel has already taken off. It's been a popular alternative fuel for over a decade now, ever since oil trading was deregulated in the late '90's and $1/gallon fuel was no more. There will always be an interest amongst serious 'hobbyists', and environmental types, but I doubt it will create much of an impact in the diesel world. There's just not enough vegetable oil around to do that. I'm curious to see how long they can make it. |
