1996 Bronco New Engine Install

Installed new motor in 1996 Bronco (351W) and the motor is turning over, running rough and missing. Also back firing and eventually stalling. Struggling for power. New distributor, new wires, fuel filter was checked and looks good. Do need to replace cap and rotor, but does anyone have any suggestions on what I may have missed to check what may causing this? Going to do a fuel pressure check today.

Thank you,

Rob

replace the cap and rotor, double and triple check the firing order both on the cap and on the plugs. sounds like the dizzy isnt stabbed correctly either being 180* off.

I did install a new distributor after finding tdc on # 1 piston. Maybe I did not install dist correctly or tdc was not found properly?? How can I check?

Note the position of rotor button to #1 plug wire on cap on cap. Pull #1 plug out of head. Rotate crankshaft with a breaker bar until you feel compression in spark plug hole. Then insert a screwdriver or something similar into hole. When you feel the piston stop moving up that is top dead center, or you can pull the valve cover and turn engine over still feeling for compression. Keep turning engine until you have no pressure on the valve springs with rocker arms. Go slowly when you do this. This is probably a more accurate way. Just make sure it is on compression stroke. You can feel this with your finger over spark plug hole. Then look at rotor button and see if it lined up with #1 plug. If not remove distributor and rotate cam shaft to line up with #1. May have to do this a couple of times. Just dont get in a hurry. When you get it really close you can rotate distributor to make it perfect.
