Help! Starter issues

1990 bronco

Went to start it Thursday, put the key in the ignition and engaged starter.....engine did not start but starter stayed engaged and going....even after turning off the ignition and taking keys out. Starter kept going until it died.

Put on a new starter. When I went to hook up the battery the second I put on the second battery connector the starter engaged. No keys in the ignition.

So there must be a short somewhere......or could it be the solenoid?

Thoughts?

Starter relay(solenoid) is bad.

You are very welcome.

How long did that last? Same thing just happened on my son's truck. Replaced the relay, next morning the starter seized. Replaced the starter, 12 hours later the battery has to be disconnected to stop it from spinning. Replace the relay again, 3rd start and it's doing it again.

I would say you have a faulty relay, Just because it's new does not mean it's good. Cheaper ones are known to fail almost immediately, but check your wiring first.

Our longest time mechanic (I work at a Ford dealership) just said the Chinese ones generally can't handle the voltage and to get the Ford one. So that's what we shall do.

I have seen it many times in the 73-79 forum. Since I have a 79 I have been trying to keep up on troubleshooting in case I run into any problems down the road .

Well, My 73 dent truck will stay running and I can pull the key out when its started.
