1988 F350 4x4 Build Thread

This is my new truck that I got yesterday. Its a 1988 Ford F350 4x4 with a 460 and an auto trans. Its still in the brainstorming phase, but I'm already going at it with what I have here. That includes a headache rack I scored, a toolbox my dad gave me, and I'm gonna detail it along with buffing to attempt to bring back some of the color. Replacing the exhaust manifold gasket is next on my list. I am 15 and this is my 4th truck. Its also my 4th Ford and 1st 4x4. FYI, I dont get allowance. I make my own money and buy my own things. I'm not rich so the budget on this isn't going to be huge. Now to the pics!

I couldn't figure out why the inside door handle was floppy and wouldn't open. Then I took off the door panel........

It is a little rough but looks like it has plenty of potential. Keep us posted on it!

please tell me that's not solder holding the door assembly together. . .

if that were my truck, and I was 15, i'd start attackin the stuff that's free/cheap like all the things that get destroyed/worn out over the years having a 25 year old truck that hasn't had friendly owners.

i'd scour the junkyards (assuming you have some good u-pick u pull jy's) for interior pieces, seats, spare axles, body parts you that you need, and any other trinkets and doodads that you find that you need to get everything working properly.

now, if money weren't an issue, i'd tear out the auto trans for a zf6, build the 460. . .or swap in a cummins or dt360 (more likely the diesel vs the 460) however, if you don't mind getting 10mpg, a built 460 would be a fun piece also.

oh, and id also cut out those barbwire crosses on the headache rack.....

other than that, shes a little beatup but looks rot free. . . .damn you guys out west. . . .

No, even better. JB Weld. Somebody cut out some notches with the a grinder and JB Welded iy. I put the mech back in with a fender washer in that little black clip after I filed off the JB Weld and it works great now

I know of one place near me full of brick nose Fords. Might be getting a ranch hand rear bumper from there and possibly a flat bed

Me and a few buddies are already talking about a 1st gen 12 valve Cummins swap

Ya, no salt here. Just gotta handle 115 degrees without complaint.

What a cool truck to start with. Good for you for being so independent. There's nothing like the feeling of doing it yourself and seeing the a results. Don't forget to focus on making sure its mechanically sound. Fresh fluids in the trans, transfer case and differentials is worth doing.!its great that ou don't have a bunch of rust to deal with, you can just chip away and fix it bit by bit. Good luck!

Been looking around

Thanks for the compliments and tips gents!

Got to looking at tires and talking to my dad. Mud grips will appear in my future after some repairs.

What is the biggest tire I can fit under this thing without modifying anything? I think I found some but may go bigger if I can

265/70 mud grip

35s will fit, but it's fairly close. 33s also look good.

4WD, Crew Cab, 460. Sounds like a party wagon to me. Perfect for getting a bunch of kids way off by themselves. How old to get a license in those parts ? When I was a kid, you could drive in Arizona at 14. It has likely changed.

In TX, you have to be 15 to drive and 16 to drive alone. If your 15, you can get a learners permit which lets you drive as long as someone at least 18 (or 21, not sure) with a license is in the vehicle with you

Howdy Tye. I am 17 myself and I have a 88 F150 reg cab long bed. My brother was 13 when he got his 89 F350 460 but we are still fixing it up same truck but going through a 4x4 conversion and flatbed. My brother is currently 16 I have another brother whom is 15. The headache rack is pretty neat looking. I agree with 89F2urd a ZF5 (I know he said ZF6) would be an awesome swap and ZF5s are really nice I am trying to find one with my brother to put in his truck. We are like you in a way, work (not a real job with my dad but we kinda get paid) and buy our own things in a way. That dent in the right side of the bed probably could be pulled out fairly easy I had a similar dent like that on my dad's 86 (except on left in front of the tire) and me and my brothers just tugged on it and got it fairly straight.
Can't wait to see more progress.

What is this thing mounted behind the back seat? I'm told its a 6 disc cd player but not sure
http://i1112.photobucket.com/albums/...904_122750.jpg

Where can I get a replacement lens and wires for the middle of this light?
http://i1112.photobucket.com/albums/...904_122713.jpg

The PO said the exhaust leak was from a bad manifold gasket. Check out what a buddy of mine found under the back seat.

I think that is a 6 cd changer. Also I believe that is the ash tray right there but something looks broken there but not sure.

Trav: Thanks for the help!

Everybody:I have a couple questions.

I don't have the door keys. Just the ignition. Do I need to replace the door cylinders or is there a code somewhere?

My steering column is absolutely trashed. The key won't come out. That's no big deal. The steering column (not the wheel) is very wiggly. You can move it around nearly 6 inches. You have to hold it up and to the right to make the engine start. The blinker works fine on the left one, but the right one you have to hold it to make it blink.

I think I will just replace it with a junk yard one. Will one off a brick nose 2wd fit my 4wd truck? Also, will one off a brick nose diesel work? I need this info ASAP!
