Surging/rough idle has returned
This seemed to have gone away for quite some time, but it came back today after my truck idled for 25 minutes. Just the same old surging/rough idle, completely fine while driving but as soon as it returns to idle it chugs along. This also came back the other day for a little bit after i drove 4 hours on teh highway, but it went away pretty quick. IPR was replaced 2 months ago, and that helped it a little bit. My mechanic was pretty sure it is injector related, he just didnt have his laptop at that time so we couldnt hook up IDS.
About 3000 miles on motorcraft 15-40 oil and motorcraft filter, less than 1000 miles on motorcraft fuel filters. FICM reads 48-49v all the time, IPR and ICP readings look good at idle, i can only get ICP upto about 3500 on the highway with my foot to the floor, but that is level ground. Might go up if i had a load. ICV reads .22 KOEO and .88 idling. I happened to take a video after i shut it off, then back on after i let it idle, and it doesnt usually jump up like this. Also the EGR valve is not plugged in (full delete) but i am in stock tune so its not commanded off. Just seeing if anyone has any new ideas on this topic, or what else i can view with my scangauge sorry, kind of hard to see the scangauge (i believe these next 2 videos are with an SRL+ tune on) this is from the other day when it was doing it heres one more from another day...lol |
Your IPR seems to fluctuate a lot... 26% in the one video and 19% in the other.
OK scratch that... I guess the one video is stock and the other is with SRL? Funny how, my Vivian Tunes bump up the IPR at idle to 24% and stock is around 22% Josh |
Yeah the ones where it's lower is with the tune. I need to check the video date as well, might be before the new ipr
Edit: yes last 2 videos are with old ipr so disregard... |
So, the one video shows 26% idling, you burp the throttle a couple times and it falls to 21-22%
That's interesting... Josh |
Also the only code that it has ever thrown related to this was for cyl #1 low contribution/balance. But i could tell it was more of a miss when that was happening, the entire truck was shaking. Hasnt come back since

The entire truck would shake and while driving (at times) and he'd feel a good power loss as the truck struggled to make up for that one injector. We ended up replacing injectors #3 and #5 and the truck has been good to go ever since. A word of caution: In my friend's situation the failing injector eventually failed completely leading to a crank, no start condition. So confirm the details with either an AE or Ford scantool, but I really think that you have an injector or two failing. |
Yeah that's what I figured. Oh we'll. hopefully just contained to the passenger bank, was gonna replace all 4 anyways

Also, my truck has some serious delay when I try to start accelerating, and if I rev it up in park/neutral the truck starts shaking around 1500+ rpm

Still going on somewhat, but also something i forgot to mention is my truck also has random long hot cranks. Like 7-10 seconds probably, usually starts in 2-3. Cranks wicked strong but just doesnt catch, kinda strange

Hello guys, new Excursion owner here. Been reading through the forums and was experiencing similar issues with first start up and running out the driveway. I started by cleaning the EGR valve (not too bad), moved up to volt meter on the FICM (48.5 VDC), ended up dropping it off at the Dealer for scan and diagnostic. Got the bad news a few hours later, bad injectors. The cold oil in the morning was causing injectors to act up. Once warm it ran great. I am now at the repair stage to the tune of $3700 out the door. I was considering doing the work myself to save some coin, but got a big trip planed in a few days and hauling a 35' camper from MI to MA via Canada. Don't really want to try my luck. Thank you guys for all the smaller/cheaper checks first. Your advice and experiences shared are really appreciated by this new comer to the club. Let you guys know how she drives in a couple of days when I bail her out!!!!!
