Introduction/Questions 70 F100
 

Hello,

My name is Craig and I just bought my first classic truck. It is 1970 F100 Ranger XLT 4x4, PS, PB, AC, 351W with C6 trans and 205 transfer case, elderbrock 600 4 brl carb w/electric choke, weiand steath intake, accel electronic ignition with super stack coil, headers with flowmasters that dumb before rear axle.

The truck runs good and starts up on the first try 90% the time. I am really excited to tinker on the truck with my son. I could use some advice/opinions on a few things.

1. The previous owner installed a gas tank under the bed and plumbed it with a fuel door on the drivers side rear panel. It is very clean job but never hooked to the fuel pump. His plan was to remove the tank from the cab. After reading on this forum and looking at the pro's n con's of the in-cab tank I have come to the conclusion it doesnt bother me. So, since the other tank is already in and plumbed how can I make it so I have dual tanks? Is this even a good idea?

2. I am trying to fix all the minor issues with the truck first. The parking break needed adjustment which wasn't to big a deal. The other is the speedometer doesn't work. I traced the cable and everything look good on the cable. I pulled the dash part out and the speedometer moved freely. I drove the truck with out the dash in to see if the cable was spinning and it wasn't. I decided I would just replace the whole cable and ran into my problem. How do I get the cable out of the transfer case? There was a bracket with screw which I removed but the cable would not come out. Any ideas on what I am doing wrong?

Welcome to FTE.
First the rear mounted tank: a lot of people go this route to remove the tank from the cab. They make switching until for the Camper Special version that had multiple tanks. One switch for the tank and one for the gauge. I sure there are many people who can chime in to tell you how and where these would be located if you wanted a more stock look.

Second issue is the speedometer cable: once the bolt is removed from the retaining ring on the case you should be able to remove the cable from the transfer case. sometimes the gears are broken or stuck so some gentile persuasion is needed to get it pop out. Once out of the case try spinning it to see if the cable is turning free in the sleeve. Most people never took them out to lubricate them so they rust up or bind up and break. The gear that goes into the transfer case can be purchased from your local Ford dealer for about $10 if you need to replace it.
