Smog No More?

I have a 1991 Ford F150 "Nite" 4x4 with a 5.8 engine!
I want to get rid of the smog stuff, pump, lines, canisters,
etc. Can I do this with out any problems with the FI of computer?

Thanks and let me know, KJ!

You'll gain nothing, and make the truck 'off road only'. The entire computer system is designed to work WITH the emissions controls in place. There is no good reason to remove them. Upgrade the catalytic converters if you're looking for a boost in the power. The stock ones are quite restrictive. The smog pump require less than one horsepower to turn, the alternator and cooling fan take more power to turn than the emissions. If you go hacking away at the emissions system you'll likely create serious drivability issues.

Smog pump can lock up and cause you a headache, and it really has no benefit if you upgrade your cats (newer cats don't use air injection). You'll need a bypass pulley or shorter belt... or do what some do on a budget and gut the pump, then reinstall.

To answer your question, yes you can ditch most of it BUT you'll get fault codes for some of it. The best way to do it is remove the components you don't want but leave the solenoids and actuators in place. For example, pull the air injection pump and lines out but leave the solenoids in place. That way the EEC still "sees" them as connected.

For some things like the EGR (which some argue is beneficial to leave in place, and may well be) you'll get a fault code anyway when the computer commands the EGR valve open and senses a lack of flow, even though you've left the electrical components connected.

You CAN create driveability problems if not done right, as mentioned above, and also be aware it's a federal offense to remove smog stuff... but it's your truck so do as you please.

Just leave it. Do simpler mods cold air, flash computer etc..

Yea tear all the smog off. Then you can post more about all the issues your now having. It will give us not only a laugh but something to do. LOL.
Just remember the minimum Federal Fine is, the last I knew was $10,000 for tearing off the smog. Just remember it is FEDERAL & Forest Service, BLM, BIA,etc can write the ticket.
