New Cam 5.8w
MY truck is a 1991 F250
Speed Density 5.8 I'm not new to working on cars, I'm a GM tech. But I'm new to Ford I decided to hop up my truck a little bit so I bought a full exhaust, GT40 heads, and a Comp Cam 35-235-3, but after doing so reading I for the lobe separation might be to much for the speed density, What would the negative effects be of using this cam? |
Rough idle and stalling, if it's a play truck you could probably live with it but if it's a daily driver it'll get on your nerves. The cam for this motor is the Crane 444232, produces a smooth idle with healthy gains across the board when paired with headers and exhaust.

Thanks for the quick response and advice. Ive canceled my order on the cam. I have had bad luck with crane cams... would the comp cam 35-255-5 compare? If not I'm still open to the crane cam. The truck isnt exactly a daily driver but needs to be reliable.
Also not looking to win races, just a good running stout motor. |
Gonna take my chances with the Crane Cam.
Parts list of everything ordered or already here: Gibson Supertruck Cat-Back Magnaflow Cat+Y-pipe 93312 Gibson GP201 Headers Lightning GT40 heads ARP 154-3603 Head Bolts Felpro full engine gasket set Stage 8 locking header bolts 8913 ( These bolts are great, Have them on my firebird) Comp Cams 3230 Timing chain Comp Cams 502-16 Valve stem seals Comp Cams 601-16 Valve stem locks Comp Cams 768-16 Valve spring retainers Comp Cams 942-16 Valve springs Crane Cams 444232 Cam and lifter kit Proform Smog pump eliminator 68110 And next week I'll order Crane Cams 44746-16 Rockers |
Lots of $$ in exhaust. I would of used pacesetter long tubes, into a Y then single 3" cat, 3" muffler then out the side. Probably cost just what those Gibson headers cost alone.

My brother has an '89 F-250 that's pretty tired and we're thinking about re-working the 351 and modding it a bit but staying with SD and not getting crazy in the $$$$ department. -Jake |
That looks like a good list of parts, be sure to use all the assembly lube supplied with the cam and lifters, follow the breakin procedure to the letter, and use an oil with a zink additive in the engine from now on.

Well so far upon disassembly ive broken the distributor. While attempting to spin it by the hex on the shaft, the body broke clean in two. Now the base of the distributor is stuck in the block.
|
Is this the correct intake? The ports seem pretty small.

Yes that's the correct intake and yes the ports are pretty small, to add to the confusion the 5.0 version of this intake has larger rectangular ports but you can't swap it on because the 5.8 block is wider so the lower portion won't bolt on.

Those small ports are lame. That Edelbrock intake is starting to look good... Its only money.
Got the distributor out today with a couple hits of the slide hammer :D Popped the lower intake off today too, the motor is VERY clean inside. Looks like its had its share of oil changes. Very happy with that, plus it only has 80K on the clock. Only problem was I brought home the GM style fuel line disconnect tools instead of the Ford style. Oh well, tomorrows another day. Good news though, Parts showed up today. I'm just waiting on the heads. Heres whats left of the distributor: http://i79.photobucket.com/albums/j1...ps7b109ef6.jpg Parts all except exhaust that's laying in the garage: http://i79.photobucket.com/albums/j1...psf2c4608b.jpg No stranger to HP/TQ or hydraulic flat tappets. 383 SBC, Holley HP fuel injection.. a large list of other things http://i79.photobucket.com/albums/j1...ps2c46d07f.jpg http://i79.photobucket.com/albums/j1...ps2af4fdf1.jpg |
Nice.
Btw, the dizzy pic is photographic evidence of vehicular manslaughter. :) |
Pulled the passenger head today. Wish I took a picture, the cylinders have beautiful cross hatch. Getting excited.

More new parts on their way.
Ordered New Oxygen Sensor, Coolant temp sensors, Oil pressure sensor, TPS, Thermostat, Radiator cap, some more gaskets, EGR line from headers to valve, and new connectors for the alternator, and ignition coil. Still left on the list is Crane rockers and MSD Coil. Also, I'm on the fence on the Edelbrock intake manifold. |
The Pro Products Typhoon is a copy of the Edelbrock Performer(the single TB car version.. whatever you do don't buy the bigger dual TB truck version it'll choke the motor). The exterior finish of the Typhoon is not as clean as the Edelbrock product but it's close to half the price and exterior finish makes no difference to performance. Here is my 5.8 Typhoon next to the stock lower..http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3497/3...916be9e0_z.jpg
http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3480/3...2ef02369_z.jpg And the complete intake, I cleaned up some casting flange and had it powdercoated crinkle black, overall I think it came out pretty good. http://farm4.staticflickr.com/3009/2...7d30784d_z.jpg |
