Motor acting up. Need help
 

Hi I was pulling a load of hay on sunday for someone and when I got to there house every time I stuck it in reverse it idled down real low like it was cutting out (kinda sounded like as if it were on its last drop of fuel and dying). my low fuel light had just come on so I went ahead and shut it off, put 5 gallons of fuel in it and it started right up. it "acted up" several more times while I was getting it parked to unload the hay. once I left I filled it up with fuel and drove home. unhooked from the trailer the next day and when i stuck it in reverse, same thing happened (at just idling), when i gave it gas it felt like it wasn't in gear at first and then went in. i looked underneath and i noticed there was transmission fluid all down the underneath of the pickup from a small leak, (that wasn't there before). Is that related?? or just coincidence?? truck has about 254,000 miles, cold air intake, 4" straight pipe, was running the ts 6 pos chip on the 100 setting. if anymore info is needed i can provide. need help!! thanks

Do you have a trans temp gauge? You may have cooked the tranny. When it gets hot, the front seal on the tranny will puke fluid.

I have the stock trans temp gauge and it read normal the whole way. trailer weight plus load im guessing was between 22k-25k and about 94deg outside. is there permanent damage to the tranny if that's what happened to it?

The factory dash gauge is just something to take up space on the dash. You can see more than a 100 degree difference on an after market gauge and the stock on moves about 1/8". By the time the factory gauge tells you something is wrong you most likely would have found out for yourself.

Pull the dipstick, look at the fluid and smell it, is it dark and smell burnt?

Towing that much weight on the 100hp setting isn't a good idea unless you have a full set of gauges AND you monitor them religiously.

Ya i normally pull on the 75 setting with a load but i forgot to switch it when i got there. and i checked the dip stick yesterday. fluid didn't appear to be burnt. it was slightly low (from leaking as you suggested earlier maybe) so i added some. any thoughts on why the tranny would cause the engine to do that though?? thanks for the help so far! i appreciate it.

I bought stuff to change the transmission fluid and see if maybe i cooked the filter. any suggestions on why the motor is stallin out???

Low fluid level is my first guess. Sounds like your TC is trying to lock up when selecting reverse which is caused by low line pressure.

Backing a load with a hot or really warm transmission can easily cause a fluid dump from getting too hot. From what I've read here, it's a seal issue that fixes itself when it cools back down with no permanent damage.

Stalling when in reverse at idle like that kind of sounds like the torque converter wasn't slipping properly. Maybe low fluid, maybe damage, maybe too much line pressure from the 100 hp setting? I really don't know too much about the auto transmission. If my truck starts to die backing up that kind of load I just let the clutch out slower.
