should it stay or should it go????

ok i have a question that i need help answering. I recently bought my 2000 F250 4 X 4 b/c i needed something that could tow my boat with no problems and also insuring my wife would never miss work in the winter (in the medical profession) and quite frankly i never owned a 4 by 4 and always wanted one. However the truck that this was ment to replace is my 2002 dodge dakota. its not a 4 X 4 but does has a v8 in it and its quite a fun truck to drive. ive owned it since day one (12 years now) and know everything about it . its paid off along with my ford i bought. From your point of view, is there any reason too keep it? any yes i know most of you all are partial to ford so besides the fact its a dodge do i sell or keep it? I dont have to sell it im not financially strapped but not paying for insurance on it and registering it every year would be nice. my wife has her car and neither truck for me is a every day driver b/c i have a 2011 e350 box truck for work. what do you think?

Have time/money for a project/fun vehicle? that's what i would do with it if it is in the budget. If you have no interest in it or it isn't getting used, let it go down the road,it's just a truck.

it really wont get driven much. I kind of thought making it a fun project down the road sup it up and preserve it as a classic for the future but really at this time dont have the time or really the desire to do so as most of my spare time is spent on the boat. if u own or owned a boat u know how time consuming that is....and quite honestly the f250 off road would be alot more enjoyable!

How many miles are on the Dodge?

Phinxter 07-15-2013 07:16 PM

:(the problem with it sitting alot is it will rust unless you keep it garaged. It's tough getting rid of an old friend, I still got my 93 Plymouth I bought new, now that I got a Jeep it sits mostly because it has no A/C, never did and the heat is killer here right now. I tell myself man it would be cool to drop a turbo engine in it and fix it up, meanwhile it sits and rusts:(

phillycincykid 07-15-2013 08:09 PM

there are 107000 miles on the dodge. yes i understand the rusting . the ford i bought was a old farm truck and the past 3 years the other owner only put 8000 miles on it b/c he became sick. the body of the ford has no rust on it but the scale buildup on the frame from rusting is present which im currently taken care off...and the two heat shields that kinda feel apart....thinkin it is time to send the dodge down the road...still has alot of life left in her and a bit of value for resale. but yes there is abit of emotion there to. =:)

I'd try and keep it as a 3rd backup. Once you get comfortable with the ford if you haven't already; than sell off the dodge. I like mopar too :)
Take the dodge out for a 20-30 minute drive every other week to keep it "fresh".
To help with rust from sitting, keep it covered and don't leave it parked on gravel/dirt.

I would send the Dodge down the road. The 4.7 will probably need head gaskets at some point. Might as well get good money for it now rather than nothing later.

Any plans to replace a primary vehicle? The Dodge would add some trade in $$$ to the deal.

phillycincykid 07-17-2013 06:25 PM

i thought about that but we planned on keeping my wifes car for another 2 years by which time the value of the truck would prob be too low. thinking its just time to sell her. while there is still value and b/f something breaks like a head gasket!! spend more money

So it is an 01 Dakota? Is it a 5.2/5.9 or a 4.7? I owned an 02 Dakota 4x4 loved the truck hated the 4.7.
My take is you own it out right, it runs OK, you know it inside & out. KEEP IT. It costs nothing to keep it. A little ins, & registration, but if your wife works in the medical field then you should have plenty of income to deal with that. If it has the 5.2 or better yet its an R/T, or just a 5.9 then you own a real goodie. The 5.9s were available until 02 for those that didn't know & were also available in non R/T version.

its the 4.7. if it were the r/t which i almost got b/c it was bad ass but i was broke back then, and i dont have the means of keeping it indoors. its going for sale this weekend once the mechanic fixes the transmission gasket that wasnt done right the first time.
