312 Y-block
I have a 312 Y-block in my 61 uni-body. I thought that the rear main was leaking so I replaced it. When I pyt the oil back in the engine I used 5qts. Drove to work and back no more leak. Checked oil level and it was bearly on the dip stick. I added 2qts and it still showed it was about 1/2qt low. Drove truck again now leaking bad. I think some one put the wrong dip stick in. My question is does this engine hold 5qts and how can I tell if this is the right dip stick?

Since 312's were only installed in cars, 5 quarts of oil with a filter change. But, if a truck oil pan was used, 6 quarts with a filter change. Look on dipstick, there may be an ID number stamped on it. Post what it is. |
Can someone post the diff in the pan from a5qt to a 6 qt

Just a question, if you don't mind, How are you posting pics of your catolog? I thought you couldn't post them because they were micro fish :-huh or whatever.
Originally my catalogs were on microfiche and bound paper. Now have CD's that cover trucks from 1948 thru 1989. Lot easier to post pics from CD's than to use hand held 'Magic Wand' scanner...as pics come out too dark. |

Grnboger,
As ND said, if you have a 312, it came from a car. Cars use a different dipstick which is at the front, passenger side of the engine. This dipstick is too long to be used with the truck oil pan, if that is what you have installed. The dipstick has to be trimmed. When the dipstick is trimmed and the truck oil pan is full, you will see only about 1/4" of oil on the dipstick. If you want it too be right, you will need to acquire a truck dipstick which gets mounted toward the center of the block on the passenger's side, assuming that you have a truck oil pan installed. |

No number on dipstick. I have the 6 qt pan but I still put over 7 qts in it and it says it is 1/2 qt low.
Do you know how long the dipstick is supposed to be? C1TE-6750-C .. Engine Oil Dipstick / 25.50" from shield to end / 24.50" from shield to add / 23.54" from shield to end / Obsolete :( No Ford Dealer or obsolete parts vendor has any, hard to find used.* ------------------------------------------------------------------------------- C1TE-6754-B .. Engine Oil Dipstick Tube-Approx 18 3/4" long / Obsolete GREEN SALES CO. in Cincinnati OH has ONE = 800-543-4959. MILLER OBSOLETE PARTS in Binghamton NY has ONE = 607-722-5371. * Contact "Picker" Don (FTE member camperspecial65), he might have one. He called me awhile back from a PNW junkyard, said there's a '64 F100 292 here. Asked me what else is hard to find besides the usual emblems/mouldings. I told him to grab the dipstick! |
how to copy

I suppose a 1963 292 truck engine would also require 6 quarts with a filter change?!
The former Ford Dealer has a large stock of obsolete parts. I think they're now calling it Haven Parts. |

The wrong dip stick or pan wouldn't keep you adding oil each time you drive it. |
