Auto trans linkage
 

I don't deal w/ automatics but my Dad's '95 F-150 is having some issues.
When you pull the selector level it feels mushy and sometimes says "N" when you are in drive. Other times it says "D" and you are in second. Recently he put in "P", got out and the truck started rolling!! Finding reverse takes 2-3 tries to miss N and P.
What linkage needs to be adjusted/replaced to solve this?? Is it at the trans or up on the steering column?? The truck doesn't have a tach, but I can tell going down the road that something is not right. However, my 79 y.o. father is in "highway bliss" and doesn't realize he is in second gear at 55mph :-hair

There are two bolts that work loose under the dash on the lower end of the shifter, they are torx.... When these work loose shifting can be hit or miss for sure.. There are pictures of the bolts in question floating around here somewhere, maybe someone will chime in who know where the picture is and post it..

Can I access these T-30 bolts w/o removing the bottom half of the dash/ steering column?? I'm not a contortionist but if it saves me 4 hours of work I'll try to be one!!

Yes, the bolts are just above the brake pedal, and can be seen by laying in the floor...

You don't need to be a contortionist, but rubber arms might be a help!! }>

If you tighten those and the problem remains, you need to replace the shifter cable, and believe me, you don't want to hold that one off, if you keep driving with a stretched cable you'll break the shifter tube and then it will become a whole new problem. It happened to me and it sucked... And the tube is around $40, just to add to the aggravation...

The 2 bolts were the problem - THANX a bunch.
The same shop that raped my dad on the injectors wanted $300 to fix this. You guys had me go in there with the correct tools and I was done in 3 minutes.
