HFCM

I changed my fuel filters yesterday. Every 10K miles and now at 90k miles. All filters still clean and the engine mounted bowl clean. However, the cap on the frame mounted filter had what looked like rust and a small metal shaving. This was in the cap and the filter was clean. Do I have an issue or is this just crap sucked in from the tank.

Debris from the tank.

That is what I was thinking. Truck runs fine. I did find myself where I had to run the tank really low a couple of weeks ago trying to find fuel.

Do you drain the HFCM regularly?

Probably not as often as I should. Around once per month. I did notice a small amount of water once but I believe that was one filter change ago, not during this filters life.

You are doing fine. Was on the outside of the filter. You confirmed clean bowl.

Once a month is a good benchmark depending on miles driven. The manual says once a month but here's my thoughts: in today's world, the "standard" for annual miles driven is based off 12-15K per year. So once a month would be approximately every ~1000 miles or so. Might not need a full drain every 1000 miles, but an oz to a few oz just to check for debris & water is a good idea.
