58 f350 axle???
 

Looking into picking up a 58 f350, Noticed this axle I have never seen before. Kinda looks like a 9" but full float, 6 bolt hole pattern and rectangle type tubes... what is it? I've been searching and I THINK its an timken or eaton :-huh

Timkens had a Id. tag and the back side of them while Eatons were only marked on the carrier with stamped numbers.

By the way, BUY IT!

I have a spare axle if you want it! 16, 17 or 17.5" wheels? F350 stakebed or pickup. Inquiring f350 minds want to know. And like Spurredon says. Get out there and buy it. What are you waiting for? :D

1957/58 F350, only rear axle available: Timken model B100. Available ratios: 5.29-1; 6.20-1; 6.80-1.

All 1953/66 F350's have 6 lug wheels on a 7.25" bolt circle.

Now tell us something Bad about it.......}> Here are my F350 fridge trucks. The green one is my '59 resto (rusto)-mod with a cummins 6at. The yellow one is the parts truck I just traded a kerosene lantern and a rusty winchester 22 for. Today I started thinking how hard it would be to part it out. I have the original ford script stakebed from the '59 on it now. All I need is an engine, transmission (and a transfer case and a couple of dana 60s)..........

58’ F350 axle swap?
 

I have a 1958 F350, after doing some work I found out it had a b100 timken rear end. It only goes about 43 mph at good rpm’s. I would really like to be able to go about 50-55 in it and I was wondering is there a good axle out there that I could find that would let me drive 50-55 with out winding the engine up tight. It is an absolute survivor and only has about 49,000 miles on it. 233 paired with a 4 speed trans. 5.83 gear ratio.

Hey thanks for the compliment! I’ll look into that thanks for the link. There is more coming for the 58’ she isn’t done yet, I got some small stuff in the interior to do and cosmetic stuff to do on the outside. Cab lights, bed pinstripes, and maybe a round fuel tank on the bed just for some cool looks!

For the simplest improvement, I would look for a complete Spicer rear end with leafs and hangers out of a '62-'66 F 350 ( all had the same 6 bolt pattern ) Most have 4.88 gears, but will be an improvement over the 5.83. Driveshaft might need to be lengthened or shortened slightly. Newer axles with higher ratios are all 8 lug.

Hey thanks for the info I’ll look into that. I know of a couple old 60’s ford trucks I could probably get my hands on. Any other info about the Spicer rear end that I need to know about? Common problems/issues?

The industry standard for many years, no real problems accept for the low gear ratios. Spicer 70's came in higher ratios in the 8 lug, 4.10 and 4.56, but you really don't want to mess around with paying someone to change out the guts on the integral style axle. The Spicer 70 4.88 unit would be the cheapest and easiest upgrade, however, 4.88 is still considered low. 1 ton frames all have the standard 34" rails, so old unit with springs and hangers intact can be removed and Spicer unit with springs and hangers installed. Spicers have a metal ratio tag attached to one of the rear cover plate bolts. IF no ratio tag, you should do a decode on the warranty plate attached to door or glove box. A super rare 4.10 ratio with the 6 lug system was a new option on the '66 F 350, a one year only deal. IF you found one of these, you hit the jackpot!.

Ok, thank for all your help, I know off a couple trucks In my area that are mid 60s ford 1tons and a least one would most likely have 4.88 gears if not I’ll keep on looking!
