It depends, I rebuilt the trans in my 95 for under $200 in parts including a shift improver kits and replacing the intermediate servo, anchor and lever.

Depends on whats wrong with it, and how good of a job you want.

An '01 will cost a lot more than a '95 due to different internal parts and stuff.

A low end $1500 rebuild will work ok, but to hit that price point they are only going to replace what needs to be rebuilt to fix the issues now, but many parts that should be replaced will be left untouched so they will cause the next failure. $4500 is way high, you had better be getting billet torque converters and a 100,000 mile warranty for that price.

Find a reputable shop that will rebuild your trans rather than swapping in a prebuilt unit. The best shops are usually private shops that are members of ATRA. Some things you will definitely want them to price out include shift kits, valve body calibration, upgraded torque converter, and a better trans cooler.
