FYI - 2015 Ford Expedition to get 5.0 liter "Coyote" V-8 and 10-speed auto

Some info has been released by Ford regarding the upcoming next-generation Ford Expedition and Lincoln Navigator.

The Expedition will get the 5.0 liter 32-valve Ti-VCT "Coyote" V-8 engine. The 3.7 liter Ti-VCT V-6 is being considered as a possible base (standard) engine, making the 5.0 liter V-8 a option.

A all new 10-speed automatic transmission is being developed for use in the F-150 and Expedition, but the vehicles might have to make-do with the current 6-speed automatic transmission until the 10-speed gearbox is ready.

Ford’s global director, Matt VanDyke confirmed the Navigator will drop V-8 power in favor of all EcoBoost V-6 power. The Navigator will get the 3.5 liter EcoBoost V-6.

The all new Expedition is expected to bow late next year (2014) for the 2015 model year. The exact release-date is sketchy at this point. The styling of the next Expedition is expected to favor the Ford Atlas concept that was revealed earlier this year at the Detroit International Auto Show.

GM and Ford are currently involved with developing a 10 speed tranny for the trucks and large SUV's. I can see Ford holding out long enough to incorporate this last change before offering the new models.

The 10 speed won't be ready until 2015 at the earliest.

Having 10 speeds will not make up for not having enough power. The 5.0 liter will need a turbo to tow anything.

Neither the Exped nor the Super Duty are a replacement for the Excursion!

My '97 F250 has a 460 and it can tow "anything" with 245 hp and 350 ft-lbs if I recall correctly. In Mustang trim, isn't the Coyote just over 400 in both categories? I'm thinking it will tow okay, especially with twice as many gears as my old pickup.

mizzitch 09-14-2013 02:00 PM

There is no replacement for displacement...except maybe boost. The 460 could tow circles around the 5.0. The 5.0 is an ok car motor or running around unloaded in a f150. If ford wants to do better on fuel economy where is the 4.4 - 5.0L diesel?

I recently had the opportunity to tow a 2001 Jeep Wrangler with a 4" lift, 33's, etc. on a steel deck car hauler. Trip was from Canton Ohio to just north of Charleston WV. All interstate. To say the 5.0 will tow is an understatement. Maybe not as well as an Eco, or a larger displacement V8, but I had zero issues holding 70 mph on most smaller hills in 6th. If it needed a lower gear, it shifted down and speed didn't drop. I was very surprised frankly as this is a smaller cube motor that is pretty high strung. It actually downshifted less WITH the trailer and Jeep than the wifes 08 Expy with 3.31's does unloaded. I love this motor but if put in the Expy, I would want a pretty deep gear to take advantage of it's power band. It gets substantially better fuel mileage in the F150 than the 5.4 in the wife's Expy. The 5.4 is a good motor. But it doesn't compare to the 5.0 IMO.

I think Ford needs to follow GM's lead and rework the 5.0L for Direct Injection. GM's DI 5.3L is rated to pull 11,400 lbs in the 1500 series trucks.

The Expy will come alive with the introduction of any new engine option. The 5.4L was the beast for it's day, it's day is long gone.

a 10 speed transmission? really? it is getting to be like a mountain bike!
I guess CVT transmissions don't work in trucks yet?
are they keeping the EL?

thinksnow 09-20-2013 06:48 PM

My 07 EL limited struggles to tow our travel trailer. According to Fords claimed towing capacity it should handle it, not the case. We end up taking two vehicles everywhere; her with the kid and me with the trailer behind my F250. That being said, if the best engine Ford is going to offer is the 5.0 then I'm out. I will jump ship and buy the new Yukon XL Denali equipped with a 6.2 V8 over a 5.0 limited Expy EL.

If you're willing to drop the coin on a Yukon with the 6.2L, then the Navigator with the 3.5L ecoboost should be a strong consideration.
