300 6cyl. Or 7.3 idi
 

i have a tired 7.3 in a 4x4 van project and a great running 112k mile 4.9 in a parts van that I'm scrapping. Would the 300 be real underpowered compared to the old 7.3? I'll need to replace the 7.3 sooner or later,so m thinking of swapping in the 4.9.....any thoughts?....buy the way what's a 90 4.9 worth?

The 300 is a great engine, in fact my favorite engine. But swapping one in place of a 7.3L IDI. I don't know, you'll be giving up torque and will end up with worse mileage.

That being said I own a E350 that I eventually plan to yank the 351W out of it to swap in a 300!:D

And the value of an efi 300 can be anywhere from $50.00 to around $450. If it runs perfect and is low mileage maybe even $500. But usually in my area I can pick up a runner for $150-$300.

The 4.9 and the 7.3 do not share the same bell housing bolt pattern, engine frame mounts, or computer. Also I think the in tank fuel pump and some of wiring under the hood is different.
I've never had a 7.3 but the 4.9 has good low end torque but power falls off after 3500 Rpm. IIRC the 4.9 in 1990 trim is 145 Hp and 265 Ft Lbs of torque which is lower than the 7.3 ratings.
I like the 4.9 for its ease of maintenance, reliability, and cost of parts. All of my three 4.9s served faithfully two passing the 200k mark with ease. I liked it especially with a manual transmission.

I'll stick with the 7.3. I do love the 300 sixes though.I guess it's going to the scrapper...I can't seem to find a good home for it. Thanks for the input.

If you scrap it hang onto the manifolds. They are usually pretty easy to sell.

I just sold a pair of exhaust manifolds for $50.00. And the intake manifolds usually sell for $50.00-$100.00.

And was it out of a truck or a van?

If it was out of a van the saginaw PS pump and bracket are a pretty popular item and sell quite well.:-X22

does anybody know where I can find the right flywheel for swaping out a 302 and droping in 300 to mate to c4 I need the corrrect ounce balance I have been told it is 0 ounce bal so it will not shake bearings to fail.

You would have better luck getting answer if you started a new post instead of replying to one with a question.

Well first off a C4 is an automatic transmission. So it's a flexplate not a flywheel.:-X22

Next you need to know the tooth count on your current flexplate. It will be either a 164, 157 or 148 tooth count.

Then finally you need one that is zero imbalance or also called neutral balanced. The zero imbalance is also what most of the stroker V8 guys runs. You should be able to get a new aftermarket one from just about any performance parts place or transmission shop. Depending on the tooth count you might be able to also pick up a stock replacement at most any parts place. If it's a 164 tooth ask for one from a 1975 Ford F100 with a 300 & automatic. Rockauto . com has it listed for just under $45.00.

Make sure to hang onto the starter and block spacer plate from your 302 when you do the swap too.
