5 cylinder Diesel in F150's Future?
 

I was surfing the web trying to read about the 2014 F150 this morning and came across this article of a 3.2L South African built diesel used in The Ford Escort in Europe. (197hp with 325 lbs. -ft. of torque) Would you buy a F150 with this motor in it? It boasts 60 mpg!

I think it would be in the high 20's in the f150.

This is not the engine used in the European Escort, as the Escort used a 1.8L 90HP Diesel. Not to mention the Escort hasn't been sold for ~10 years now. You also cannot directly compare European fuel economy to EPA. European fuel economy numbers are usually inflated 205-40% compared to EPA.

That's the motor that may be used in the 2013 ford transit. It's also used in the global ford ranger. There was a sort article about it in the last issue of dieselpower. Can't see it being used in a small escort?

I think it could be a home run even though I wouldn't get it for myself. Diesel fuel is too high and maintenance along with initial cost is a show stopper for me.

I can't imagine Ford having 5 engines available in the F-150. Which engine would go?

ya i cant see them with 5 motor to chose from in a F150 so they would kill one of the V8 i bet! i would guess the 5.0 because the raptor needs a power house to rest on!

If it came to that, I would bet the 6.2L would be the one on the choping block. Its more of a niche engine. The 5.0L is Fords volume V8, Alot more trucks roll off the dealership lots with the 5.0L than they do with the 6.2L.

The 6.2 would definately be the engine cut from the lineup. The Ecoboost and 5.0l make up the overwhelming majority of sales. Not to mention the 6.2l is terrible for Ford's CAFE rating.

Dropping the 6.2l from the F150 has seen passing references from Ford execs quite a few times in the past. Not that long ago Ford wanted imput from consumers on whether they would consider buying an Ecoboost Raptor over the 6.2l.

Not surprising at all sir. However, I think that dropping it all together would be a mistake as well. If the decision were all mine to make, I would still offer it in the SVT, Harley and Limited trucks and I would make sure that the company made a huge profit on each sale as a result.

It's not like they haven't had 5 engines available in a single F-Series truck before.

In the F-250s, you used to be able to option them with a 4.9, 5.0, 5.8, 7.5 and a 7.3 Diesel. Actually 6 options if you include the Lightning 5.8.

I thought the 460 and diesel were only f250 and up options?

They were, but you could get an F-250 with all of those engine options.

Fair enough, I believe you are right.
Here is my personal guess as to what will happen....
The 6.2 will be gone, I think it was only brought to market to phase out the v10.
I think the 5.0 will be changed a bit into a ecoboost type engine, as it has been pointed out that some of the castings have provisions for such use in the future.

So I think that the f150 options will be 3.7 v6, 3.5 ecoboost, or 5.0 ecoboost for the raptor.
Ford ditched the ranger, because they speculated the only people that bought them wanted low budget trucks, so I expect they will use the 3.7 a lot on XL models.
Then for the super duty line up, I bet either 6.7 diesel, or 5.0 ecoboost will be the options.


I could be wrong though.
In fact, most of the time, I am wrong.
