2013 SD Lariat crew, 4x4, 6.2, 3.73 locking rear end, ingot silver/black leather interior, lariat interior pkge (not ultimate) 20 " premium aluminum wheels, 5" step bar running board, roof clearance lights (real cool), tailgate ladder, mats. Paperwork ready tomorrow and order will be placed next week. Agonized over Pale Adobe or Silver. Family wants me to get black. I say nay to black, live in FL, too hot. Leaving Chevrolet after many years. Was going to get a 2014 Silverado, but cylinder deactivation turned me off, as well as looks. Daily driver, will inevitably get a 10Glb boat/ rig. The SD is sweet and the 6.2 perfect for me. Will post pixs when she is p/ud, 8-10wks......Sorry for long post, GREAT FORUM.
P.S. Do you refer to your SD as "she"? LOL.

Sounds nice.If you will be towing 10k a lot, I would opt for the 4:30 gears. My .02.

acf6 03-22-2013 04:46 PM

^ what he said...id definitely get 4.30s if you plan on towing

LCT 03-22-2013 05:34 PM

I considered the 4.3 rear end but after meeting 3 separate Ford dealers and discussing my needs and driving habits all 3 advised against the 4.3 and highly recommended the 3.73. I will tow approximately 10% of my driving time. Moreover, 2 of the dealers claimed the 4.3 rear ends whine. All assured the 3.73's would be fine.
It will be the longest 2 mths of my life.......

Dealers.. Hmph... ;)

I'd do some reading around here on gearing if you haven't already. Just sayin'...

The sales reps do not live in the real world of towing. The fact that they said that 4:30's whine shows how inept they are. These new transmissions have two overdrive gears, so when towing with 3:73's you might have to lock out 6th gear to prevent continuous downshifting and just use fifth but with 4:30's, you can use 6th and possibly get better fuel mileage when towing. Also with 4:30's you get that extra oomph off the line to help you when towing heavy. I doubt there is any or very little difference in fuel economy between the two gear choices. The 4:30's would be so much more fun to drive.

I ordered a 2013 SD f250 ultimate lariat package with black leather blue jean metallic, crew cab 6" chrome steps , camper package and plow package, nav , spray in bed liner , tailgate step, rubber mats, 18" chrome clad rims w/ raised white leather tires, heated and cooled seats must have with black leather, ordered on feb. 17th was told 4weeks but it will be 5 weeks this Sunday but I live in ma and truck is at last stop in upstate ny at last stop before Ayer, ma which then it will go on truck to dealership which should be beginning of next week. I can't wait it has been the longest 5 weeks of my life. Oh I also got the 3.73 locking gears i run a plumbing business and have a 31 ft travel trailer that I pull a couple weeks in the summer so i was also advised to get them for better overall mpg when not towing. Thought about changing to 4.30s but it was too late . It is almost like Christmas hear waiting for it my family is sick of me talking about it, I have been consumed with this truck since i ordered it.

WhiskeyTangoFoxtrot 03-22-2013 08:11 PM

Congratulations on the new truck!
I ordered an F250 Super Cab 8' box with the 6.2 a couple weeks ago. I ordered the 3.73 gears, then called 4 days later and changed it to 4.30. I expect about a 10-15% MPG decrease around town and the ability to rip off the line, but, hopefully, better mileage towing. I figure I'll tow about 15-20% of the time. The towing capacity for a 5th wheel goes up 3,000 pounds (to 15,300) with the 4.30 gears. The towing capacity was a big factor in my decision.
Already sold my old truck. It's gonna be a long 3-5 (additional) weeks. I'm gonna need a new 2013 Super Duty Brochure. The one I have is getting worn out.

congrats !!!!!!

You guys have me rethinking the gear ratio selection......

As I said, the vast majority of my driving will be around town, the towing will primarily occur between May and September towing the boat to boat ramp (a mile from my house) and out of town locations (keys, Destin, Miami, Palm Beach). Under these conditions do you all still feel I should go w/ the 4.3? Thanks for input.

2000silverbullet 03-22-2013 08:47 PM

I don't want to sway your decision one way or another, just talking from experience. 90% of my driving is empty. I love the 4.30's, but I knew when I ordered it that I was going up in tire size and wanted to be prepared. Plus the thing rips pretty good off the line for a 8,000+lb truck, even w/ the 35" tires...

Just keep reading around this forum and up in the SuperDuty forum, lots of 4.30/3.73 threads.

LCT 03-22-2013 09:02 PM

Will continue to research. Any noticeable "whining" on the hwy w/ 4.3s?

05v10 03-22-2013 09:09 PM

Get the 4.30's and you'll never regret it. I have 3.73's and I'm considering new gears front and rear. Get the 3.73's and on the first heavy tow you'll be kicking yourself in the ass. I bought of the lot and my butt is sore on a regular basis.

dualwheels66 03-22-2013 09:48 PM

There is no whining with 4:30 gears. I have then now with my V10, there is no noise what so ever. That's just salesman bologna. Get the 4:30's.

rvpuller 03-22-2013 10:03 PM

We ordered ours 2 weeks ago F350, 6.2 SC, 2WD DRW, Ultimate Lariat package, Navigation, Kodiak Brown with Adobe two tone, and 4.30 gears :-X04. I've had 4.30 gears in 2 V10s and would have nothing else, remember with two overdrives the top gear RPM will be low.
