Does Power Increase After Driving A While?
 

Has anyone noticed a power increase after driving the 6.2 a while? I have test driven several 6.2 F250s, all with 3.73 gears, and with different tire sizes. I'm not going to say the trucks were "weak", just not peppy by any means. I know it may have a decent bit to do with drive by wire as the 5.0 feels very similar in the f150. I have also driven the ecoboost and it doesnt have the lack of response. I have both a 2003 f250 6.0 and a 2009 f250 5.4, both seem to have better pep or throttle response. A 5 star tune is out of question (need that warranty), do the 4.30 gears fix this?

The stock throttle mapping is horrible which has a lot to do with the sluggish feeling IMO. Even the Raptors feel this way.

Proof: Punch it at around 60. It will drop to 3rd and take off pretty well for a 7300# truck. It won't ever have the tq of the diesel to where it will accelerate by rolling into it, but a tune will improve throttle response more than you imagine. That's next on my list.

They are a little laggy stock, but from what ive heard a custom tune really wakes these things up. My friend just put one on his 2011 F350 6.2 and said its a complete difference, the truck moves! now

I guess it depends on your perception of pep. I thought the same thing when I got my 11 last fall as I came from a Hemi Megacab 2500 4x4 and it would jump when you gave it a shot on the loud pedal. However most of my use for these trucks is pulling trailers and while I have not pulled our 34 1/2 ft travel trailer yet I do haul my flat deck with about 8k of water on it every month and the Ford flat out pulls that trailer like it is not even back there. You really do not feel the engine lug or feel the need for the tranny to find another gear. So IMO the sluggish feeling without any load is a non issue given my use. Of course others buy these things to rip and tear in so for them it probably does feel abit sluggish but at the end of the day they are 7300+ lb work trucks not hot rods.

My truck felt like it woke up after like 500 miles or something. I can't remember, but it was early on its life, the truck just opened up. Do you have the truck or are these just the test drives where you're experiencing this? The gearing will improve that launch a wee bit too.

The truck is a whole other animal w/ a 5 Star tune on it....

I dont know specifics but if the tuning is like most other vehicles it has a tq limiter built into the tune. A custom tune can eliminate most or all of this limiter. That is the majority of the lag time from hitting the pedal to feeling it go.

I did feel my truck loosen up a bit after 1k miles which is what I expected.....when I first test drove the truck I thought it was pretty damn stout for a big heavy truck. A lot of it is perception of what you may think is peppy...... For this size of a truck it moves out very well but if comparing to something else with comparable power and less weight it can feel sluggish......as stated these are work trucks designed to tow and they do so very well.

I would like a tune but I am not so unpleased with the power to void my warranty.....I am actually happy with the performance for what the truck is.

Thanks for your responses. I don't have a truck yet but have access to some good deals. I pretty much always have a trailer behind me although my loads are usually between 1500-3500 lbs, but can get up to 6-7000 plus whatever is in the bed of the truck. My 5.4 liter f250 (manual tranny) has some good get up and go in 2nd gear and even 3rd, but hurts making it up inclines while towing. I thought my 6.0 (stock w/ 35" tires) wasn't so great on throttle response till I went on a test drive recently. Other than the power issue, and maybe braking, I like the newer superdutys. I'm trying to get over skepticism.

Thats not real heavy....you could pull that with a F-150....same situation with me.....I pulled what I pull now with a 1500 GMC I did not need the Super Duty but I love the truck and just wanted it. The power is there and as mentioned the delay you feel can be removed through a tune if you dont mind voiding warranty. I never really notice the tq limiter when towing just because most of the time when I tow I am not leaving from a start hard at all.

However I feel the stock performance is fantastic....from a dead stop hard stabb my truck will spin and considering the weight of this thing that is impressive and thats with 3.73's and 33" tires:-jammin

I would like to have the tq limiter removed but not at the expense of my warranty.

If your in the market for a new truck go get you one....you will not be dissapointed with the 6.2 unless you are expecting it to perform like the 6.7. or even an ecoboost which I have not driven I would just expect it to be a bit more spunky with all that tq and less weight.

Wish I could get away with a half ton. 200 gallon skid sprayers and pallets of stone/sod don't bode to well for the back of an f150.

I had to look for it but this is why they feel sluggish until you wind them up. 60% is the max the throttle plate will open until it goes over 3,500 rpm (unless you have a tune that is).

OP this is a good question. When my V10 was new there was a noticeable power increase around 5000 miles. This has been verified by many owners of 3v 5.4 and 6.8 engines. Just wondering if you guys with the 6.2 have noticed something similar. It must be Fords way of letting the engine break in. So anyone with over 5000 miles notice a power difference?

Brought home a new truck last night that is virtually identical to the last one I drove. Something was either a little off on the last truck or the fact that that there was only 3 miles on it vs the 40 miles on my truck (my truck had to be driven 30 miles from another dealership). There is definitely a little more throttle response. Thanks for all your responses.
